That plunger was used on the db2 IP equipped engines. That yellow arrow splash thingy is for timing the IP

Got it all stripped down and washed up. and Boy did I make a huge mess!! wheeled it outside and the power washer plastered all that crud everywhere including covering me too! gave it a good blow job with my compressor, wheeled it back inside and coated the cylinders and crank area with some WD-40. I have it clean enough were I can remove the lifters and not get all that gummy goop all over.
Yeah the chain is loose, it will need to be replaced. I haven't taken it off yet, not till I have the new one here. the block still needs more cleaning, I am thinking about filling my pump sprayer with some diesel and using that with a small wire brush and a stiff bristle parts cleaning brush to clean up all the area where the lifters are, the piston tops, and the ring ridge area where all the carbon is. see if that will get all that stuff loose and washed out. then go at it again with the power washer.
as for the heads, I think I will set them in my parts washer and clean them there first, then use the power washer so I don't get too plastered with that gummy mess.

Got the heads all cleaned up. washed them in my parts washer then with the power washer. I am finally able to see the casting numbers on them now! lol they were all covered up with the gunk.
cast # 14057299 on both heads. from what I can find online they are from an 83ish 6.2l non-turbo engine. so from what I can tell, this engine has been apart before. 81 block and 83 heads, likely these heads are the original to the 84 burb this came from.
with this info, block cast # 14022660 date 10-29-81 and heads cast # 14057299 does any one know what the specs are and if this combination is good to just bolt on my turbo (GM-4 iirc) with turbo-master and run with it? are these saut after or just a run of the mill and I'm lucky they aren't cracked?

Tomorrow I have a lot of cleaning to do!! earlier when I was washing the engine block off, I parked the engine too close to the house!! my son's truck was in the way and I couldn't move it... I tarpped the front end so it wouldn't get plastered, but I failed to think about the house LOL
I have a portion of the exterior wall and a window that got plastered with all that gunk that was in the engine HAHA. gonna get the degreaser out and then scrub and spray down the house. lesson learned LOL

I wouldn't be surprised if both block and head are original to the burb. If those are big valve heads I wouldn't get carried away with power. Power usually means heat and those big valve heads were notorious for cracking between the valves

yes these heads have the large valves. I have not measured them, but I can. what should the large vs small OD measurements be?
Not too worried about getting big power, just reliability. as it is my 93 has all the power it needs even with it being worn out it has more power than my 95. If I need to install a pyrometer on the passenger manifold I can do that when the engine is out. as for boost, unless I put the pedal to the floor, I normally only see 5-7 psi boost out of it in normal every day driving. I have seen upwards of 10-12 psi when feeding it the onions, but that was only done when I was checking to see what the turbo master was set to (unloaded). I have never put any weight behind this truck simply because I didn't want to blow up what's left of the engine.

One of those squarish metal one gallon paint thinner cans with one side cut out then crimp down the edges with a pair of pliers makes an excellent container for cleaning parts.
I use mineral spirits/paint thinner for cleaning.
Cleans quick and dries without an oily film.

Our favorite Russian buddy always recommends the DMSO- but man you have to be fully covered when using it. That stuff drawe chemicals through your skin into your bloodstream.
My memory is not much longer than my pinky toe, but I think the difference is of 1.94 versus a 2.02

For some reason I missed the post with them cleaned up. Good, disregard the dmso option.
Those heads are desired because the valves flow better. But what precup is in it can determine what turbo it can handle. Read about small precups and using bigger turbo like hx40 by @WarWagon and when he added the fuel she smoked.
So the precups getting swapped MIGHT be worth considering. Can you get a clear pic of the precup & valve side again now that they are clean?
Since you are staying calm not a power house- staying with the smaller precups might be ok. An hx35, hx40, etc will be easier on the engine than the gm turbo. But added cost of coarse for that. Sticking with the gm turbo is ok. It won’t hurt it, just pay attention to EGT. If you measure in the manifolds and keep at 1,000 or less - the area between the valves shouldn’t crack. Bigger precup & turbo gets the power made with lower egt. So does other stuff like intercooler.
Did this engine come with the db2 on it? If you are running it- I have those square body brand new precups that N8in8or had machined out to diamond precup size for me I would swap. Diamond precups aren’t available individually now (or at least weren’t when we did that). They come installed in new heads. Only ones available now are the triple squares which are just a hair smaller than the diamond. Still plenty good for any turbo, but costs about $260 a set.
As for the tops of the pistons not being coated- don’t worry about that. The coating is definitely better but if ya keep the egt below 1200 sustained a long time the uncoated pistons never gave me a problem. They rarely fail.

I might not get much done today, it's raining it arse off and the garage roof is leaking!
I pulled the valves from the #8 on the head and have the valves in the ultrasonic cleaner to dislodge all the carbon buildup on them. what I'm curious is I found not valve seals, only with looked like an old crusty o-ring on the valve stem just under the keepers but nothing in the valve guides or over them. I also took a pic of the seats after wiping them down with a rag. they for the most part are shiny as well as the area on the valves where they met. I have the parts laid out as they came out assembled. at the top of the pic are what's left of those o-rings that were on a second grove cut into the valve stems underneath the keepers
I wiped off the valve stems and slid them back into the guides, there is a slight amount of play, I don't know what is acceptable, but there isn't much play.

And here are the valves from #8 after a bath in the ultrasonic cleaner. That lower grove in the stem was were that o-ring was. idk if that was supposed to be the valve seal, not sure how that would keep oil from getting into the intake/exhaust chambers.

Nothing identified on those precups- I think those are the really tiny ones.
It shouldn’t smoke too much with stock fueling and gm turbo kept around 10-12psi boost… but it might leave a bit of a cloud if you stomp it from a dead stop.

Well work in the garage has ceased. rain has gotten so bad that the floor is now flooded with about an inch of water in some area. had to cover the engine with a trash bag due the the leaks in the roof. yard is completely flooded and there is about 2 inches of water standing on the concrete patio outside the front door! Don't know how much rain we have gotten but I heard that at my work which is only about 6 miles away has gotten a little over 5 inches!
