How do you all get 6.2s to 300K miles

Im at an altitude of near 14,000 FT above sea level (Pines Peak), was in 3rd all the way up, not even going fast (25MPH) its currently at water temp of 220

Im at a rest stop currently, letting it idle to cool down, water temp os going down, however it is nor climbing either

Im seeing two different smoking situations here.
Cold start up it’s more blueish. What doe that smoke smell like? I am assuming it that is oil and the overheating issue from before beat up the rings especially in cylinders 7&8. Then the age of the valve guide seals are probably letting some by overnight and you are burning more oil now.
If it smells like diesel fuel, that is something entirely different. I feel like we had this conversation but I’ve had it with so many people that I forget who.

The black smoke driving up the mountain- you are not getting enough air for the amount of fuel getting pushed in with the engine timing plain and simple.

What boost is it running right now When getting that smoke? Adding which turbo and boost level at certain rpm into signature would help us a ton.
I know you post videos showing gauge- but I can’t see the gauge clearly in the videos.

Have you ever put a timing tool on it to know what you’re actually getting?
The type that clamp onto the injection line and use a timing light is an affordable and findable tool.

Are you just visiting at that altitude a minute or will you be there for a while?
If it’s only on this trip that ends in a month or less I would not bother chasing the black smoke & lack of power. If you are there a while then yes there are things to do to help it out worth while.

1. I think it smells like oil? Ill admit, I wasnt really paying attention to the properties of the smell, just more so the views.

2. EGT did not go past 10 and the Turbo PSI was below 5 (honestly around 3) when going up that mountain, if anything, the moment I was on an a steep incline (not in OverDrive) thats when the smoke would come out

3. I was in Denver and in Colorado Springs for 4 days (4 day weekend for us in the Military) im back in South Dakota at the moment.

4. No, negative on the timing part

3 PSI boost is not enough pressure.
Is this a manual waste gate, vacuum actuated waste gate or does it even have a waste-gate ?
If you dont know which waste gate the turbo has then give us a picture of the turbo.

We don’t know the best boost numbers for your engine because we don’t have specs on that ATS aftermarket turbo- but it is a really small turbo, I would estimate same size or smaller than the gm3. When the gm3 was added to the 6.5, 10 psi all day long was a safe range. iirc above 12psi is when refueling or timing changes came in. BUT 3 psi is crazy low.
But being a smaller turbo than that, you might run even higher numbers.
Best is to call tech support from ATS with your turbo tag and try to get any paperwork, especially mapping from them if possible. Maybe find out about a rebuild kit while on the line with them, find out of any other wheels available for it at the same time. That upper intake piece is definitely their build as well.
ATS is really on top of sequential turbos- might find out if they have one for that set up.

Something that might help is a cac but without knowing your iat and egt- not sure yet. Until a person gets a system so far away and or large that they introduce lag- it is never bad. Dropping ait does the same thing a turbo does- more oxygen to the cylinder. With the benefit of colder intake air comes lower egt as well.
You end up with a vicious cycle of hot air in, heats up egt and cylinders more, which heats up turbo and intake manifold, which heats up incoming air more…repeat. This is the precursor to your ect (engine coolant temperature) getting hotter. So while many think of a cac as a performance/mpg helper it is an engine lifespan helper overall. And with the beautiful square body, you have lots of room up front that catches a lot of fresh air to make it work awesome. Plumbing into yours might be the challenge.

I went back & looked at your turbo tag again- found nothing on their website about it so you should all for details.

Ill ask around and see what I can find about the ATS Kit, apparently those were pretty rare, so no surprise theres not much online about it.

some people say they're solid, others say that theyre a bit small and other kits are better, me personally, the turbo has served me well, so I cant say anything too bad about it.

I was able to find a few forums, though its just dead ends, unless I perhaps overlooked something:

Someone here claims its non wastegated:

Someone here actually detailed how to install it + specs:
Ats turbo setup for gm 6.2 https://share.google/X57Qboh3GyghNif54

Thats all I could find, I seem to have decent luck on FB, so ill ask there about the ATS Kit
