Amazingly in major crash, you’re better off in a rig with the airbags everywhere.
The whole thing we all figure is big, heavy, strong truck means your safe in a crash. But unless you actually get squished inside the car, it’s better to have the car collapse and absorb the impact.
The first couple years of airbags caused injuries, but any airbags from late 90’s foreword you get minor issues- way less than what would have happened hitting dash, steering wheel, or side windows.
Look up injuries for drivers and passengers in pickups- and it will make you re-think owning one if you can afford something different.
If I was rich and famous (well at least the rich part) I would get tesla model S for each of my family members. Those things are so far off the charts as the safest ever tested they are talking about making a new rating system
Years ago my wife was driving a saturn sl2, got tbone in driver’s door by an Olds delta 88 doing 60. Eveyone wearing seatbelts. 3/4 in olds got hurt, only a big guy in back seat got released on scene. Wife had to have cut in side of her head stapled together where her glasses got pushed against skull so hard the frame of the glasses cut her skin, and a headache for a couple hours. No other injury. In the olds: broken arms, broken legs, split open faces, drivers jaw broken and missing teeth from steering wheel. All teenagers in the olds. Sad.
That crash got me to looking into what happens instead of just guessing.
When I drive my hummer by myself, I fly down the hiway. Family with me and I drive very different. Built a serious roof structure in place of the open top for handling a slow roll over with family in it just in case. 1” DOM tubing to 2” tied to each point and the factory rear kicker 2” bars. 2 layers of 16 gauge steel. Great for roll over- and that rig handles T-bone like a dream. But front end collision- things could go way wrong, so I built a brushgaurd out of 2” - the one in the video I knocked down the block wall with. That will help intrusion, but is bad for same reason pickups are bad = all that energy goes through the heavy duty frame and the people inside absorb all the g-force.
I think the best example of it is 59 bel air vs the 2009.
