What did you do with your GMT400 today...or yesterday....

Changed front and rear differential fluid and transfer case fluid on my wife’s 2023 4Runner Off Road Premium. Lubed the drive shafts and rotated tires. Made my wife hand me tools and operate the garden pump for the fluids as her punishment for not logging this maintenance. I believe I last did these fluid changes at 30K and the truck now has 51K miles. I still need to change cabin and air filters.

Observations: Front and rear brake pads have little wear and should easily go another 40K miles. Front tires are worn to the bars on the inside. Overall, tires have about 5K to 10K left of wear on them. Need to make it to Fall for the Black Friday tire specials.

Truck averaged 19.5 mpg on the trip down from Montana to SoCal and it was loaded down with equipment. Truck runs great as you would expect from a Toyota.

Rotate them tires and probably last a while longer.

Since last fuel stop with the K3500, used it in town some then allowed wifey to drive it to church and home on Sunday.
Didnt stop for fuel but did use it for some more in town mileage.
I’ll do a couple more church runs then get fuel and see what it then takes according to the ODO.
I guess for a more accurate calculation I should be using a GPS tracking app instead of the ODO.

I did rotate them. They currently have 51K miles on them and these are the OEM tires which usually go 60K. After these it will be Cooper AT3 LT load range E. Those will go at least 80K.
The spare is still brand new. Should have been in the rotation but it’s on a different style aluminum wheel. The tread depth on that new tire is nowhere near the depth of a new Cooper AT3.

Started tinkering with the 95 today. didn't do a whole lot, but I did find out the batteries in it went south again! even with the trickle charger on it, the batteries failed. not sure what happened, but I made a trip back to the same place I got a set before and picked up a set of reburb batteries for $140. will install them tomorrow and start checking to see if there is a drain. if there is, it has to be a very slow drain, the truck started up the other day to move it from under the tree to the back driveway and I used cables off it to crank over the engine on the stand to do a compression test.

today while I was tinkering, I disconnected the batteries and charged them separately, one was real low, after charging and letting sit, it only showed 8v on my meter. the other was up at 12. I think it's just coincidence that one died and took the second batt with it. they both were used from the JY.

Tomorrow I plan on getting the batteries installed, then I need to pull the belt and check the pulleys. I heard some chirping when I had it running, I think the tensioner pulley needs a bearing or the grease is dry from sitting. Might also be the alternator bearings. Then give the steering a good eyeball check.

BTW I need to replace the shifter cable from the column to the trans. are they specific to a "diesel" truck or are they all the same cable? it's a 95 so it's the first to get a shifter cable rather than linkage.

Got the batteries installed today, picked up some AC stop leak and some cans of 134a. charged up the ac. also cleaned out the CKO provent that I had on the 93 and installed it on the 95. checked the amount of blow by coming from the oil fill, it's nothing compared to the 93! just a slight haze puffing from it. still have a few odds and ends to do yet and then give it a bath.

parts I need to replace now is the column shifter cable and thinking about seeing what it's gonna take to pull off the ABS monster on the inner fender and swap it for a normal purportioning valve. I think that's what is causing the brake pedal to have to press harder. the 93 stops on a dime where this one needs a heavy foot. I might study the brake line routing on it and compare to the 93. maybe a trip to the pick a part yard will be in order to source parts similar to what's on the 93 to stuff in the 95.

Found a shifter cable on the jungle site for $20. said it fits 95-99 trucks, burbs, and tahoes. supposed to arrive sometime tomorrow, we will see if it fits. it'll be nice to not have to pull the shifter down an extra slot to hit drive and battle it to get in park plus have to use zipties to keep it on the trans lever LOL.

60 miles round trip to church and home. FP at IP holds steady 9 PSI. I have yet to turn it up at the AD regulator screw.
Coming home. Ambient air temp mid 60s.
The electr viscous fan is set to turn on at 198*.
Driving at 80 MPH the fan was on almost constant and the engine temp was right about 205. I didnt stop to set up the MAXI AP200 ALDL adapter and phone app to see the exact temp, just off the rear cylinder head and the left front head temp gauges.
I’m thinking bad new 195 Delco thermostat or else that chinesium coolant pump is garbage.
I’ll get a set of new Delco 195s from NAPA or Oriellies tomorrow and see where that leads.

Got the new shifter cable installed. boy that was a challenge!! had to unbolt the drivers seat to get in there far enough, but finally got it in there adn adjusted. shifter is a little stiff, but not near as much play. when I pulled the old cable out, it had a length about 15" long where the outer part of the cable had rotted away allowing the inner cable to slip out. she was about to go!

took her up front and gave her a bath. ready to be driven for a while. parked the 93 in the back pending heart surgery.
