raced my truck...

Changed it yesterday, didn't see anything horribly wrong with the old sending unit, it had a little rust on the tube but nothing that looked rotted through. The metal tub from the return line to the top of the unit was loose, but that shouldnt affect anything on the return side. I did also find a length of steel tube that was kind of rusty going toward the lp, plus the metal crimps that went from the rubber hose to the fitting that connects to the sending unit were rusty too. I ended up replacing the whole length of line with 5/16 rubber fuel line. I think my fuel gauge was screwy too, it seems a little more steady now.

I've only put about 5 miles on it so far, but it seems good. Running smooth with no hesitation or stumbling. Fuel pressure is 4-6 driving around at just off-idle, WOT its about 2-3ish. Havent been able to get it down to zero, but I also havent had room or time to get it up over 60 mph. I dont even have enough fuel to test it out, I put 5 gallons in it and that has to last me until payday, so no WOT runs. The couple short bursts I did felt pretty good, little blacker and heavier smoke than the greyish I was getting before. Can't say as to seat of the pants if its as great as it was that one time, but it is at least fixed and not falling down anymore.

Kenny, not sure what kind I bought or what exactly you meant, but I did see something was ziptied onto something else.

I got mine from Advanced auto. The arm for the float snaps into the sending unit but hat snap is not strong enough so I put a tiny zip tie around it.

getting ready to pull the fuel tank in my truck, having similar issues to Detroit Dan. thanks for giving me some details on what I am in for. And thanks Ace for the tip about the float arm. tomorrow's project.

pull the bed off the truck? or pull the straps/tank?

I do straps/tank with my floor jack for the assist as a 1 man show & no place to rig the bed off the frame; for me it's easier than pulling the bed, jumper the lift pump to run to get out all the fuel so it isn't sloshing about as you maneuver the tank down,

its a really easy job, actually. undo the fuel filler, the plug for the sender, then undo the two straps and lower it with a jack. I've done it on the ground with a jack, last time was nice having a lift. Unhooked everything then lifted the truck up and the tank stayed (rolled a toolbox under it). hardest part was squezzing my head between the driveshaft and the muffler to get up above the tank to see.

mines from Advance Auto also, forget what brand. Didnt see the post until after I put it all together. Not going to pull it again to check that. Just have to keep my fingers crossed, which is how I drive all the time anyway. Seems to have fixed the problem, and after a few days my fuel pressure seems to have gone up some and stabilized, must have got the air worked out of the gauge line finally. Running and sounding a little funny now though, injectors seem louder and I feel a faint hesitation at idle. It's probably going to blow up now.
