My trip, the lil 6.2 that could!

Bill I sent you a PM with my phone # Tim(TD) would like to try to make the gtg...any idea on your ETA to this area...I know you are running behind but am just trying to plan out things with the upcoming trip, you passing through and the kids being out for summer vacation...post up any info you can...

A friend indeed and much better than a Secret Santa!!!!! Thanks Paul u r a fine person and I do owe you thanks for not only the stat but for motivation, as u said in the pictures u posted of my rig " some assembly required". My energy and enthusiasm was starting to weaken but ur visit and motivation are infectious and I fell right into it and " finished the assembly"!

While I am at it I owe a huge thanks to all of you "sooty black handed greasy diesel smelling " friends out there here on TTS for the info and skill set u have imparted to my less than mechanical self! LOL WITHOUT TTS I would have been sitting on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck with a blown up truck! Thanks to reading on this forum I knew to back off on the fuel, more fuel equals more heat, and to turn the heater on! The Trip would have ended right there!!!! We got a bump in the road but "WE" will persevere! Never let it be said that "The Lil 6.2 That Could" did not do the job! My lil sweetheart pulled Fancy Gap, the toughest grade east of the Mississipii with 14060 lbs of total weight, the Yankees that go from Ohio to the beach call it "seven mile mountain! She was runnin fine in third gear with accelerator to spare n only limited by that last half mile of excessive heat! I think she done good!

Pepp I got the number, heres my plan, gotta have a plan! I think somebody say u have to have a battle plan even tho once the first shot is fired it goes to he!! So fix the truck today when the mailman brings the tstat. Then leave Sun for Franklin Nc for a couple days ruby mining then a trip to Meridian Miss for the GTT. Then on to Slidell. Say two days to Meridian n two to u at the most. Thats six days total. This is not a speed race, gotta stop n explore n read signs n stuff! LOL
 
Hey Ak u r right cause u have to boil pasta longer if u up in elevation! By the way Ak the house is lookin good, u doin quality work and certainly its a very nice concept! Gotta come see that somehow!
 
Ok truck is finally fixed!!!!!! Long story but the "faithful lil mobile fuel cell.....AKA the horset trailer will be stayin in Va at my parents. I am beat, tired, filthy, sweaty n VERY HAPPY THAT the truck is rip raring to go on The Trip!!! I will type it all out tomoro for yall. Not leaving Sun, gotta consolidate load between trailer n truck. Leaving out Mon. Morn for sure.
 
Air up those E-rated tires and load most of that WVO into the camper...and if someone close by has a hitch haul you could borrow, you could put your scooter on that...all that weight should give you a smooth ride...Be safe out there...

Since they're always referring to things "up North" one would assume that it's up hill all the way to Alaska, especially since it's near the top of the world. Of course, it should be down hill all the way back to the "Lower 48"!:driving::rof:
 
So heres the update. Put the Ac Delco in that I got from Leroy n tried the truck and it ran at about 190 to 200 on good roads and interstate but overheated goin up Walker mtn to 220 with the heater blasting. So I had talked to Turbine Doc, Tim, n he said my truck should have the stat from Gm dealership with the black plastic collar so I put it in, the $42 one, same result but it would drop the temp a little faster after climbing the mtn n starting down. So I unhooked the horse trailer n took off testing it out and no problem, ran below 200 with ac on on hills and interstate! On climbing Walker mtn if I turned the ac off it would climb at slightly less than 210. Also had a lot more speed and acceleration, she struggled some with the trailer n was really slow on long grades and mountains but did great without the trailer. Here is what I think happened, at 14060 lbs she had a world of power to pull but couldnt handle the heat so I overheated on Fancy Gap from too much weight n a bad fan clutch and that ruined the tstat. With a new stat n hd clutch I coul do allright n the flatland but no way in the mtns. If I had a 98 fan clutch and fan I probably could do it but the truck handled the camper so much better without the trailer that I am gonna do what Pepp suggested n reload the camper with all the oil n camping gear from the trailer n take off. Have to installt the inverter etc in the camper today n leave Mon morn for Franklin Nc and the rubyy mines! If anyone has a 98 fan for sale let me know I am going to do as WarWagon suggested n switch out on The Trip.
 
Sctrailrider the horse trailer weighed 2000 empty plus about 3000 lbs gear! They way I understand it a trailer gets u several ways,one wind resistance, two weight, three rolling resistance.

I just took the fan/clutch off my '98 Burb because the clutch was starting to leak to put on a Duramax fan lo-temp HD clutch combo. You make it here to Lincoln before hitting the mountains, the fan blade is yours for free with no shipping, it's now taking up shelf space and gathering dust. I'm assuming you've done the serpentine belt conversion on your 6.2, as the '98 blade is a reverse rotation blade. PM me today if you want it shipped to somewhere, but I think you'll be ok since3 once you get out of Georgia you'll basically be flat-landing it till you hit the Rockies.

Hey, that's how I managed to get 34mpg with my '95 Camry running 82mph westbound on I-80 through Wyoming two falls ago. Crested the top and threw the selector into Neutral and coasted down those long grades at 80+ mph for 3-4 miles then popped it back into OD at the bottom and reset the cruise control for up the next grade. Hillbilly overdrive!
 
The fan will use more power. But it is well worth it.

With a NA 6.2 engine they struggled in the Rockey mountains. They smoked. The 350 of the same era smelled like sulfur and burning hair and wasn't that much faster. We weren't far behind some friends with a 350 suburban on a Wyoming hill climb back in the early 90's. (They were still in sight and smell.)

Working that hard on ant hills :hihi: out east make me think that it is a very good idea to not have a trailer in the mountain passes out here. Wyoming and Arizona and constant up and down rolling hills and then the mountain grades make you get the whip out and take some paint off the fenders to make it up...

We loaded the truck high if we could get away without a trailer including dropping the trailer at mid-run to gain MPG.
