Just got my new cooling fan and clutch. Can't wait to put it on and see how well it works. Even though it's not hot yet.

Welcome both new guys! Possum, show and tell!

Kyle, before you buy anything read up on this forum. Used to be a place you could get new waterpumps that had factory test run only time on them for $20! Sorry you missed that.

Get the spin on fan style waterpump, 01-05 dmax fan blade, or nla gm#15992650 metal 9 blade from ebay or junkyard and Kennedy Diesel fanclutch which is he best fanclutch available currently for the balanced flow waterpump.

Then depending which thermostat crossover you have, you MIGHT be better off keeping yours or replacing with one of two options. Either The single stat blockoff crossover or if you can’t find that on ebay or junkyard then get the dual stat crossover AND Leroydiesel.com BRF that goes into top of waterpump.

I will not take away credit from some good stuff Heath has done. But his race truck engine is half filled with concrete for heat/cracking issues and doesn’t run “his” cooling upgrades. He has learned what parts to resale. None of that kit he sales is made by him, but he does keep upgrading to the latest best parts as he learns of them unless it is a part he can’t resale like Leroys fotting or Kennedy’s clutch. I always give him credit that he stopped selling the rear head crossover kits when he learned they do more damage than good, he doesn’t rip people off, he tries to resale the best stuff he can imo.

Welcome.... we are close enough for a meet up some time, I'm just outside of Spartanburg... I have a "one off" fan system on mine, part Humvee part custom made....

I have the dual stat crossover. I’ll look into the clutch and BRF. I don’t have overheating issues currently but I’m trying to avoid them best I can. I live on a mtn in east tn. And everyday I come home (with the trailer attached) the water temp gets to 215-220 until I get to the top of the hill and then it drops back down right away. So if I could get that under control I’d be in business.

Welcome to the forum Possum. I'm over in Anderson/Pendleton. I'm good for an upstate meet up. Do share at least how it goes on install and any change.

Don't overlook cleaning the stack really good (even if doesn't look bad). IMO its best to use something that foams up and lifts bugs and crud like HVAC coil cleaner.

Classic Obsolete fan clutch delay. Fan is kicked out before the hill. You go WOT for the hill. Time delay to open T-Stat. ECT runs away. Time to heat up radiator. ECT rise stops a moment as the radiator heats and then resumes running away. Time for the air to heat up the fan clutch thermal spring, time for the working fluid to move in the fan clutch... ECT is still running away. Finally the fan roars to life and the ECT runaway stops. This process can take up to 2 min for the fan to respond.

So far the best way to solve this has been a low temp Kennedy Diesel fan clutch that kicks in sooner reducing the ECT maximum temp spike. Works best with a 185 t-stat for the hill climb ECT spike. Single T-Stat and in extreme AZ heat I have good luck with this keeping it under 210.

Other better solutions are a on/off fan clutches that completely eliminate the Obsolete thermal spring fan clutch delays.

Another area most don't consider is the GMx "Asthma Attack" turbo that is restricting the exhaust. The restriction keeps heat in the engine. In short it converts 3 MPG directly into heat when you are pulling a hill. A better turbo like the ATT will reduce your cooling fan need. I discuss this in depth here: http://www.maxxtorque.com/2012/07/the-65l-diesel-factory-equipped-asthma.html

@schiker Good advice. The cooling stack cleaning specific to removing the oil cooler is detailed in the reference section. http://www.thetruckstop.us/forum/th...nd-radiator-to-clean-them-periodically.42962/

Yea I’m going to try that fan clutch and see how it does. And put a new turbo on the upgrade list. It’s a 6% grade for 3 miles straight up. It’s all highway so you’d think there would be plenty of time for the fan clutch delay to kick on and cool things down, no? I don’t push my truck that hard up the hill so no WOT. Maybe 3/4 or less and just slow down in 4th gear.

Sorry it took so long to reply on this thread. I got the Ac-Delco 15-80690 Fan blade and the Ac-Delco 15-4674 cooling fan clutch. Have not had a chance to put it on yet. Back in Nov. I was towing my camper (9,000 lbs.) up I-85 stop and go traffic uphill and it was pegging on 210 degrees. My butt puckered up and I dropped to a lower gear to give it some more fan speed which helped. It wasn't even hot out. I am all in for a meet up.

I tried to Look up details on the fanclutch you mentioned and cannot find specs. Cant say if it is good or bad. What info brought you to those parts? What is lockup begining temp, at what temp is highest lockup ratio achieved, and what is total lockup percentage?

Basically I didn't know what to get. I was looking at comments on Amazon about these items and another person said this is what he used for the same problem with much success. I HOPE it works. As far as all those spec's...you might as well be speaking Greek. Lol

The fanclutch is an incredibly important part. Imo I would return the unkown spec fanclutch and get the ones that are proven.

Does your fanclutch attach to the waterpump with 4 studs and nuts or with a single large nut?
