6.5 fan and clutch diffrences

Those three next to each other is like a race: Usain Bolt, Justin Gatlin, and Chad the 75 year old guy with the limp from down the street.

While you have them out of the truck, can you measure the blade length from hub to tip on the 2 not going in the trash can for me please?

The yellow tub is scrap metal for the Boy Scout troop. The scrap fan clutch and old water pump are going over to a machine shop with a 1993 454 water pump to retrofit it to use a diesel fan and clutch. (Project cold AC on the 454.)

Note the two clutches left and center are Old style KD low temp clutch and the center is a brand new 2015 KD low temp clutch. Looks like a supplier change for KD.

The one on the right is a 6 bolt. The company that makes that fin pattern is Torqflo. The other two look like Hayden is making them for him. We do know he is having them made to his spec- not an off the shelf clutch.

Zombie thread revival:
Anyone know the dmax fan blade part number off hand? I’ve a nephew in need of one right now.
I wonder if this is accurate

dmax fan part number for use on a 6.5 turbo diesel

To upgrade or replace the mechanical cooling fan on a 6.5L Turbo Diesel with the popular Duramax ("dmax") fan, you will need the 20" Duramax 9-blade fan. The common ACDelco part number is 1580690 (also referenced as GM part #'s 15010202, 15228374, or 1580920). [1, 2, 3]

Critical Compatibility Details
  • Water Pump: To bolt this fan directly to your 6.5L, your engine must have the 1999+ threaded (spin-on) water pump. [1]
  • Fan Clutch: You should pair the Duramax fan with the correct spin-on fan clutch. The Hayden-2886 (often referred to as the Kodiak or 1999+ 6.5L low-temp fan clutch) is highly recommended for 6.5L diesels to prevent early lockup. [1, 2, 3]
  • Shrouds & Clearance: The Duramax fan is slightly larger (20" in diameter and wider) than the factory 6.5L fan. Installing it will require slight trimming of the lower fan shroud or replacement of worn engine mounts to prevent rubbing. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Where to Buy
  • You can search for the ACDelco fan and compatible 1999+ cooling components on RockAuto.
  • For specialized, pre-matched cooling combos (including the fan and the correct 6.5L thread-on clutch), you can check out the DieselSite 6.5L Cooling Products page. [1, 2, 3, 4]

If you tell me the year of your 6.5L truck and whether it uses the original factory fan clutch or a converted threaded hub, I can help you confirm the exact bolt pattern and fitment.
