What would cause an 01 HO 6spd to de-fuel in hot weather?

Just so you know, a Cummins shop may not have the equipment to communicate with a Dodge product. Though the engine is a Cummins, it uses an ECM, wiring harness, and automotive electrical system built and installed by Chrysler. Cummins INSITE cannot communicate with a Dodge product. Chrysler uses the OBD2 connection. Cummins uses J1587 / J1708 or the J1939(in this case) Heavy Duty interface, and the associated INLINE adapter.

Find out what active and inactive codes are on the ECM first. Then start by checking the electrical wiring harness for things such as loose pins, corrosion and moisture. Autozone / Pepboys will pull codes for free, just make sure to tell them you just want the codes, not for them to diagnose the problem.

we live in the toolies. nearest autozone is 100+ miles away! :)

as far as just reading codes, the harbor freight scanner wil do, right?

In 01 the ECM is a CUMMINS part as well as the harness, DODGE just used a generic J1939 interface to link up the CUMMINS ECM to there PCM. As for diagnostics for the engine, you will need a GOOD scan tool. Even the AZ one will not read the ECM. You need a good true bidirectional scan tool to access the ECM.

That's very interesting information Ferm. One of these days I outa spend at your shop with you, I could certainly learn a thing or two

figured I would give everyone an update on this, after he bought it, the battery terminals were a corroded mess, so he unhooked them, cleaned them up, and his son found a deal online about static buildup, so while unhooked, they turned everything on, stroked the throttle pedal, etc, then hooked batteries back up, and havent had it de-fuel on them even once.
