I just got in a reman kit for my GM-8 (to hold me over til the Slim deal goes thru). Any links, pics or advice on doing a quicky rebuild?

Also, the dealer said he'de rebalance the rotating assembly at no charge if I pay shipping both ways. Is this needed?

Thanks for any tips.....

Here's one... ask Turbine Doc or Slim Shady.

And that's all I have to say about that.:yesnod:

Seriously, I know squat about rebuilding turbos... where did you get the kit?

GM -8 is a independently balanced turbo, pieces are balanced independently and assembled then checked for balance.

Quick and dirty, if the compressor shaft / turbine shaft have any grind marks on them the assembly was balanced after it was put together, If there are no grind marks the turbo pieces were balanced independently and checked for balance after assembly to make sure they were within spec.

Mark the compressor wheel and shaft location for reassembly and have at it.

I rebuilt a gm-8 for myself and it was not for your average person, you must be sure you can perform the necessary steps and maintain cleanliness while doing so. It can be done, however if you lunch a compressor wheel because you nicked it or you over tightened the wheel and stressed the compressor your motor will not like the metal pieces that it spits out.

Also make sure you replace the thrust washer as this is not included in most kits, this is a must as it controls the side to side movement of the turbo shaft

I found it at "the auction site". Search for "180273186146"
This major turbocharger rebuild kit includes:
2 Journal bearings
3 journal bearing snap rings
1 Thrust bearing
2 thrust collars
2 Compressor side seal rings
1 Turbine side piston ring
1 shaft nut
4 Seal plate bolts with washers
1 beaded flange gasket (not shown)
1 Oil drain gasket (Not shown)

Is the "thrust bearing" another name for the "thrust washer" you spoke about?

It was $86 incl shipping and balancing if I...

"ship me the parts I need and return shipping, I will clean, inspect, polish, balance & ship back to you in the same day. I strongly recommend you have the assembly balanced for durability, all you pay for is the shipping. I don't need the complete turbo to balance. I need the compressor wheel, turbine wheel, thrust collar, spacer and shaft nut"

Any torque values avail so I don't over tighten (as you warned against)?

Should I not be doing this?

Sounds like a complete kit, thrust washer and thrust bearing same thing, the torque value can be had from the company you got the kit from, I don't remember the value it was in inch pounds, I may have it around here somewhere, I will have to look. Your parts supplier should give you that figure though.

Thanks for your help, as always.

Let me know how your custom turbo deal is progessing and I'll probably jump in.

Any thoughts on using a Pop Off Valve to limit boost on new turbo?

My reman is fresh and has brand new thicker casting heads, but I believe they used head bolts (not studs) and stock compression, so I'd be a bit concerned about sustained boost over the 15lb range.

Thanks again

No need to limit boost with these turbos, also these are Diesels not gassers, BOVs are used on gassers primarily to dump boost when throttle plate goes shut, we ain't got no TP,

WG on Diesel turbo is to assist with spool up keeping max exhaust energy when it is in limited supply on bottom end & improve mpg, meet emissions, and keep boost to fuel ratio correct when power is needed
