SS Diesel Glow Plugs... Cause My '95 6.5 Sub Needs Glow Plugs

Ok, so to the other part of the glow plug equation, what is the reputation of the GP controller's durability from SS? If I had the benefit of seeing this dialogue ~7 months ago I would have installed different GP's and controller in the truck. Preference is to replace the least amount of parts, but if I have to go after the controller I will . . .

Not sure how much SSD charges, I got a GP controller from local OReilly.

It was a BWD brand and has been there for more than 4 years without any problem.
IIRC, it was around $45.

I have not heard anything picky about GP controller with any brand, ACDelco or aftermarket.
I would just get whatever is most economical.

So, if you already put SSD GP controller, that is fine also.
One good thing about SSD is that he sells just about all parts some of hard to find parts, for 6.5 diesel.
 
Question: for those whom had issues with the "Instant Heat" GP's, how recent were the experiences?

Background: A quick search came up with a dialogue from ~2009 (or perhaps 2007) where the manufacturer knew that the GP's had an issue with the 6.5 due to its 'after glow' cycling and had a mod in the works to eliminate the issue. Have not had time to get deeper into whether the mod was put into service and proven.

This one just resurfaced from around a year ago.

I take it they have an intention to fix it but I don't think they ever do anything with it.
There is never any confirmation that they fix it.
 
Mystery solved about whether the Instant Heats were corrected to work with the GM 6.5:
> Installed in August 2012
> Removed 5K miles later in April 2013 and Bosch's installed.

Indications were that the starts got harder without a pre-warm as the engine took a little longer to crank, when it fired there was a good bit of stumbling and smoke, and nailed for a minute or two until the engine got a little warmer (even with the pre-warm). Had the mechanic trash the old GP's.

Shame, the Instant Heats were nice while they all worked as there was much less 'after-glow'. Out of all the parts that I replaced last summer, the GP's were the only ones that I did not research :o
 
We all live and learn, I've bought parts I later would wish I had researched more.
 
One last indicator of issues with the Instant Heat GP’s: the multimeter showed no resistance from the lead at #1 to the negative battery terminal (which I realize is actually reading all GP's in the line). With at least one GP shorted out to the block and the increased belching at start-up, I did not look further.

Thought about going the warrantee route, but there are other things which need my attention to keep the cash flowing rather than take-on a distraction. Even if I did get a few new GP’s under warrantee, would have to sell them, so I went the easy route of just replacing and not looking back.

And in running with the hypothetical of the GP controller as the issue, I bought one from SS at the same time I bought the Instant Heat GP’s last Summer, had them all installed together, and included a new PTwiring harness, so even more reason to skip the warrantee route and go directly to the circular file :D

Jay a volt meter only tells part of the story, if one burns out it will tell that reading open, also will tell if you have no or weak voltage, but what it won't tell you is if a glow is only partially heating, only way to really test a glow is to remove it and apply 12V to it, what you are looking for is a bright orange/red full glow tip to center in under 4 seconds, if it only 1'4 glows at tip and reddish toward the middle then the glow is on it's way out.

Sort of like an electric "eye" on your stove that really doesn't get as hot as it once did, and gets "reddish"/hot partially but not really fully heating to full orange in the entire element, reads ok with a volt meter but not doing its intended job.

As far as Walt/SSD saying glow controller is at fault on some of them and require replacement before warranty them, that is easily tested with a volt meter, glow controller is really nothing more than a high current relay that PCM switches on/off in the glow mode, if switched on and you are getting trons at the output leg of the control/relay it is working, if not replace it, now you may also have a harness issue but volt meter will rule this out as well, glow harness is a parallel & not a series circuit so if one goes out it will not kill the rest of the glows juice sort of like a modern Christmas tree light set one goes out rest stay lit.
