Shopping for a laptop

Hope you have more luck than me Mike

I got suckered in buying a $600 Lenovo last may after my old dell's hard drive crashed.....BIG MISTAKE :agreed::agreed::agreed:
Been bad right out of the box...fan error beep beep beep.,..i send it back for replacement.
No such thing as over the counter replacement:nonod:,..they only repair! Puker was gone for 4 months, when i got it back it had all kinds of issues after again after 10 min of use.
Fan error was back on,..then the POS shut down a couple times out of the blue and the last time i could not turn it back on.
Seller said bring it back in, puker been gone for another month.
Got it back in oct, i started it up in the store,...beep beep beep fan error.:WTF:
Store refused to refund the money, they still have the puter,...i haven't heard nothing since:nonod.
I wasted $600 :mad2:

I put a new hard drive in the old Dell,..works like a dandy again.

F''ck Lenovo,, never again.:nonod:

Hope it serves you well.

I'd wait a bit and see if you want more speed. If you do, then the SSD and a RAM upgrade might be in your future. If not, then leave it stock. ;)

I'm gonna make an assumption that my luck will surpass Simons...
I'll run it for awhile out of the box.
This is more powerful than the HP Z400 I do 3D design on at work so I'd imagine it'll do all I ask and more for quite some time.

Toward the HDD, SSD is nice, draws less power, and is certainly quicker than the rotational disks; it does have a limiting factor in terms of the number of writes. Have to admit that I did not look into the actual laptop purchase, but if possible go with a dual drive setup: operating system (OS) on just the SSD and everything else (swap file, program files, etc) on a 7,200 RPM HDD.

In general the 'laptop HDD' gets a bad reputation for sluggishness as most people do not get into the specs and see that the common 'laptop' drive spins at 5,400 RPM primarily to save power (battery life); step it up to a 7,200 (or higher) RPM HDD and you just removed the bottleneck at the price of a shorter battery life. Direct analogy to y'all diesel heads is that the 5,400 RPM drive is like putting a 1/16" fuel line to the IP where sure it will work, but put in the correct diameter line and life gets much more enjoyable

In terms of swapping out HDD's, if you can remove and replace your ECM, you can replace the HDD; just get the appropriate teenie-weenie Phillips and a set of 'reading glasses' if your eyesight is less than 15-20 ;) Oh, yeah, also have a cup to hold the teenie screws as they are a real bugger to find if you sneeze . . . :hihi:

Looks nice! Do yourself a favor, get an external mouse (wired or wireless, your choice), and try to disable the touchpad (usually in the BIOS).

For the OS, unless you are familiar and happy with Windows 8, might want to back-rev to Windows 7.

While I know that you did not ask . . . Consider pulling the 5,400 RPM drive, install the better drive, and then install the OS of choice. This way, you have the OE drive in its OE state if you need warrantee support but get to avoid the frustration of working with a slow HDD, a less than popular OS, and save a couple of hours to remove the cr@pware that vendors typically imbed in the system.

If you are going to replace the HDD, start practicing how to remove those teeny screws and here is the manual:

http://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/lenovo_g400g500g405g505g410g510_hmm.pdf

and turn to page 32. Looks like the G510 is a single drive system, so just decide whether you want to go with SSD or a 7,200 RPM HDD.

Thanks Jay. I'm giving these things seriious consideration.

And BTW, I NEVER use the touchpads on a laptop. They make me look like a fool. Have cordless mouse(s) will travel :hihi:

Any time :)

And if you do pull out the 5,400 RPM drive, when the warantee expires get an external HDD case with USB connection, put the 5,400 RPM drive in it, and delete the contents; this way you get *plenty* of extra storage for all the diesel porn pictures :hihi:

Finally took a test drive today. Haven't gotten very far but my 1st impression of W8.1 is that if I had never used a tablet or android phone I would hate it. It's setup just like them. Although I didn't feel I needed to have a touchscreen, mouse navigation is just as convenient. I may stick with it. Still want the SSD though.

I'am tempted to nail my $600 lemon to a corral post, paint a bulls eye on it and do some :AR15firing:, that plastic POS ain't any good for nothing else anyway

Software engineer friend finally got the SSD in and running. Lightning fast response!

Mike, how do you like windows 8.1?

I bought my wife a laptop for Christmas with 8.1 and she hates it, I don't care much for it either but am getting more familiar with it.

It's alot of different stuff from what everyone is used to but it's also intuitive if you are used to an android phone or touchscreen tablet. It still has the windows explorer setup like the W7 system and works pretty much like it. Just a matter of getting used to it I think. Right now I'm pretty busy doing other stuff so I haven't really had much time with it yet. I'm so used to the S3 phone though that I think it'll work out just fine. I still use the Chromebook as a perfect portable browser since it doesn't have a desirable portal for a virus (there's basically not much of a drive) and the laptop is a replacement for the heavy duty aspect of the old desktop.

I still don't have a Windows 8.1 PC, and I'm glad after using a 8.1 desktop today. Man, it takes some getting use to.

If we'd had it thrown at us for work we'd all be screaming. I'm not under the gun with a personal one.

I don't think the corporate enterprise will be pushing 8 out anytime soon. Rumors already for 9 are appearing to fix W8. Win7 is still my all time favorite.

I don't think any corporation is going to move to 8/8.1 any time soon. It seems like they move every-other. XP was out forever and everyone switched to it, then Vista was short, 7 was out for quite a while and got switched to, and now 8 is probably going to have a short lifespan.
