P400 in the Burb install

Ok guys, I'm done wrenching for the day in the 98* 100% florida climate, so I'm kicking back in my Lazy Boy with a beer and I'm going to try and match my photo's of the day with my description of what I did. So first are a couple of pics of the sheared keyway upon initial disassembly.

Here is the cam gear installed and torqued with the DSG gear drive gear. Note the position of the timing dot on the gear which rotated a little while torquing the cam bolt to 125 FT LBS.

I have always wondered about the small half moon key in the cam and why it wasn't a full slot ?

I may just mill the slot in my cam and use a full length key... as is only about half the key engages the pump gear..

So, should I fire the engine as it is without the H20 pump and upper cover plate installed to check out the gears in action? Will it blow oil everywhere? I may be more willing to clean up a little oil rather than doing this again. I still think it's in the pump. Everything you see done here today was done slowly with a lot of attention to detail and every bolt was cleaned with solvent, then wire brush wheeled and torqued to specs, thanks again to Twisted Steel for the torque specs.

One more question, what are these grooves cut in the aluminum gear case for? I use a thin coat of Permatex Ultra Black RTV and it pretty much fills these channels when installed.

Probably a real good idea, if I ever have to pull this engine out of the truck again Chris you will be doing quite a bit of modifications to it's parts.

And thanks to WILL L. s referral to real4wd.com and I bought some extra key ways or I'd e be sitting on my hands right know and wouldn't have gotten any of this done today! Thanks Will !

It looks like a place for coolant to go if the block freezes or cracks or something IDK.
