Hey everyone, I just acquired a HMMWV (1097R1). It has a 6.5L (NA) with TH400. This is my first diesel endeavor as my other Hobby truck is an ‘83 Squarebody. Attached are some photos of each. My reason for joining this forum is for the 6.5L truck but thought I would share both anyway. This 6.5L Hmmwv is coming from the GovPlanet auction. I got it for quite a bit less than I was wanting to spend, which is nice, however, the Inspection Report says they used Ether to start (prob why I got it for less). I am hoping it’s not detrimental to this engine And I sent a message after paying to tell whoever is at the truck, to NOT start the truck again. I will have it loaded with a winch trailer, and hauled to my house in Texas hopefully sooner than later. It started and ran with normal oil pressure, RPM and all. Either way, I look forward to this addition And learning as much as I can here, and hopefully down the road, help others as well!

Ether will pre-ignite when the glow plugs kick on. Below is a good link of damage it could cause.

The immediate engine damage that can result from ether starting fluid use

Some diesel engines use ether to start. The 6.2 and 6.5 IDI engine is not one of them. GM put a nice warning sticker letting you know you may be replacing your 6.2/6.5 diesel engine if you use a starting aid. You have a 10+ HP starter, two batteries, 8 glow plugs, a glow plug controller, and...

Thank you for posting this. I started reading yesterday and will continue to read and review. I appreciate any help here and hopefully will have the truck soon to see exactly what’s going on with it.
