LBZ 06 water pump R&R

Hard To Tell With Everything Back On The Motor. I Figure The Hole In The Balancer That's Closer Not Further Should Be The Answer To My Question. Also The Inner Schroud That Everyone Throws Away And I Was BUll Headed Enough To Put Back In,Well The BAL Bolt Is Currently Making Contact With It. I'm Pretty sure It's Time To Start Pulling That pesty Schroud Out Of The Way And Flip The BAL.

It looks like you got the balancer on backwards. When you pull it off, make sure you didn't crack the front cover by torquing the balancer down against it.

Thanks! Is That Common The Cracking ? Because I Used A 5 Ft Torque Wrench To 260 lbs? Also Did You See The Pictures? So The Thicker Piece Of The BAL Is Supposed To Go To The Outside?

Never heard of somebody putting one on backwards before, but putting that much pressure on a thin cast aluminum cover coudl have done some SERIOUS damage. You could have cracked the cover, or even worse, damaged the oil pump as it is right behind the cover. With the balancer on backwards, all that torque you put on the bolt went against teh cover, not the balancer and crankshaft like it is supposed to. And that cover is not meant to take any pressure on it.

I Remembered Taking The BAL Off And Either Before Or After Using The Airgun blowing The Surfaces Clean, But Fermanator From The Photos I Posted Just To Be Clear They Need To Be Flipped OrThat It Is Clear To You The Wrong Surface Is Forward?

Primer Got The Balancer Off And The KEY Which Resembles A Small Rifle PRimer Is Sheared. It's Round Not A Trench Like A Small Block Chevy Would Have. So There's No Way To DrivE Out The Damaged Portion? So Far This AppearsTo Be The Only Damage. It Was A Total Pain In The Ass To Get The Balancer Off. Alot Of Patience. I'll Try To Attach A Picture Of The KEY. Any One That Knows How These Are Replaced Please Let Me Know.

You Know When You Pull The Balancer On A Small Block Chevy Off And There's A Jetway In There Well It's The Same Principal,But On A Motor Like This It's Surprising That It's So Small. It's Like A Little Bitty Button And It Sheared Off. Im Thinking If I'm Real Careful I May Be Able To Drive It Out. Hopefully GM Has A Replacement Im Stock. It's A 5Mm Round Pin.

It's the baalncer alignment pin. It just holds the balancer in place until you get it torqued down. The actual torque is what holds the balancer in place, but it must be keyed as the DURAMAX is an axternally balanced engine. The balancer should slide right onto the crankshaft by hand and bottom out. When installed correctly, there will be a counterweight visible from the front. And the thicker mass portion of the balancer goes forward.

Thanks!I'd Figured It Was Wrong After I Looked At It A Bit. Doesn't Seem To Have Trashed Anything But The Pin. When I Was Looking For Info, On The Pin Replacement There WereA Few Guys On Other Sites That Were Leading Towards the Pin Being What Kept The BAL True And That Was A Weak Point On The X-Man And My Head Kept Saying What About The 260 Ft Lbs Of Squeeze.? There's A Company Selling A Pin Replacement Kit That Comes With Some Replacement Pins A Bit And A Jig But It Was Like $ 179. I'm Going To Check A Guy Here In Town To See If He Has it And Purchase A Replacement Pin From original Equipment Here In Town As Well. I'm Also Going To Try And Coax The Broken Portion Out With A Small Drift Punch.

Maybe try a dent puller as well. A little more umph for getting it out.
we think alike! I Have The Spot Welder One But I Believe The Pin Is Too Small. I've Got A Pneumatic Angle Drill And Some Left Hand Bits I'm Thinking On,And Also Looking For A V Groove Bit Guide As A Little More Precision Insurance. I Can Probably Do It By Hand. Plan Is GetThe Center DrilledAnd Smallest Ez Out I Can Find If It Gets That Far. Called Local GM Parts And They're Going To Have Pin For Me Later Today. $1.50 Ordered Extra Just In case The First Doesn't Go As Planned.

My Body Aches ,Long Day yesterday And I Was Having A Difficult Time Reaching Down To The Crank With Pneumatic Angle Air Drill. Should HAve Picked Up Replacement ,5Mm Pins Today. Gotta Get Them In The Morning. Also Did A Bunch Of Looking And Found A Thread That Was Saying The Pilot Hole For The Pin Goes Through To BAL Bolt Hole. May Look At Putting A C Clamp On To See If Broken Portio Will Press Through. The Drill Jig Was Not easy To Locate Locally May Look Again Tomorrow As Well.
