I'm going to pull a 27' 5th wheel trailer weighing 10,000 loaded. I've read there was problems with the early version of this trans but the word "early" was not defined. What about a 2005? Should I have it beefed up, or the torgue converter? I've read there are problems there too. It has 97k on it and shifts fine now but thought I'd see if I should consider doing something before I start towing full time.
Thanks in advance,
Jim
Welcome to THE TRUCK STOP. I merged your 2 threads together to help this one make sense. As to the term early for the 4L80E, the break point that most consider was 99. Early 99 was still very simliar to the 1st 4L80E's built starting in 91. Starting mid year 99, GM made MANY improvements to the 4L80E trans. As far as I know, the 4L80E was mostly un changed from mid year 99 on. As to there durability, my uncles 05 is somewhere around 325K miles, and he's just now starting to have problems with his. So I believe if you take care of it, you will have alot of miles ahead of you with it.
