Hard Start after some maintenance

Plug in the block heater and see if that solves it or lessens the time it is smoking.
If so, that will point towards the glow plugs not warming it enough.

Is there any correlation of engine coolant temperature and smoke?
Does the smoke smell like diesel fuel or like coolant?

If the heater has no effect, I would get a fuel pressure gauge on the ip inlet so that you can read the pressure. Monitor it when starting with smoke, then when the smoke is gone.

Smoke does not smell like coolant.

I'll try plugging in the block heater when I get a chance. I don't have power where I usually park it.

I've got a fuel pressure gauge on order, so I'll check it when it arrives.

I can dig up which wires are which on the OPS and where you need to connect to. everyone is correct for a proper way, building a harness that is plug n play is the way to go and not cut and splice into the factory harness. the one connector that might be hard to find a female of is the OPS.

as for using the overide switch on your bosch GP's DONT! they will swell and cause you much greif. the Delco 60g's will not swell up and have a self limiting heating element in them so you can basically run power to them constant and they will just stay red hot! (dont do that in the engine)

but as a test if you want, go pick up a new bosch GP and a delco 60G get you a hot batter and rig you up a way to hold the GP out in the open like in a vice, connect it direct to the battery and watch them glow. see what the bosch does and what the 60G does after a while.

You will be lucky if the bosch just quits working, but I bet it will also expand. there is not much room in the head for them to expand before they become stuck. usually just a thin coat of carbon from the combustion will cause some coaxing to get them out!

but before doing all the relay mods, do the simple testing like using the block heater and fuel pressure testing first. lets be cretin where the issue is before we end up creating another to tend with!

Oh and for the relay mod for the LP and OPS, you will want a 5 pin relay. preferably one that you can mount on the firewall and be weather sealed. those are harder to find.

I used to recommend the bosch that were 80034 duraterms (the number changed since then to a longer one but device was same). Then one failed, broke off and destroyed my piston. The plugs were not 10,000 miles use in an optimizer engine with all the maintenance done one could think of.

You didn’t have bosch in your signature or I would have caught it and detailed this earlier. STOP USING THE TRUCK AND PULL ALL 8 PLUGS NOW.

I am not the only one who experienced failures with the bosch. Most guys had the tabs break off but I know 2 others who had the elements break off. One guy bent a valve. The other lost almost everything: piston dents, cylinder wall scored, bent valve, bent pushrod that went through valve cover, element destroyed turbo- chewed the fins & jambed up so shaft snapped and inducer hit housing and wiped turbo housing. A couple inducer fins went through intake and damaged valve & seat in the other side head.

Or risk it. 🤷‍♂️

Thats the thing to do.
Just because the injectors are acting out dont mean that they are bad.
Pull those injectors and get them to a reliable shop, or, there is one member in here that does check, test and adjust injectors.
I for some reason cant remember His handle/name. Oh yeah, @Rockabillyrat or @dbrannon79 might be interested in such a project too.
All the injectors will fit nicely in one of those smaller USPS flat rate priority boxes and its IIRC 12 or 15 bucks to mail them and the same box can be used to return them to You.

And when pulling GPs if there are any that seems difficult then stop, do not go any farther.
Order in that GP removal tool that Leroy makes and sells.
Every 6.2/6.5 owner should be equipped with one such tool.
I have always run AC Delco GPs even when I was meching for the DOT over here and have never had a problem pulling one of those GPs, however, soon as I heard about the problems with GPs I ordered in one of those tools, We just never know when the occasion will hit and need one of these tools. I dont like having to wait for some such as that so I can continue on. I now have the tool.

Just ordered 8 AC Delco 60Gs. I'll change them tomorrow.

iirc the nickle base stuff is resistant to 1000+ degrees. at work thy use some stuff like that rated to take up to 2000+ degrees. for in the head I would go that route. copper should be good too as long as it can tolerate up to 300 degrees since it's in that environment.

Remember a dab of anti-seize on the threads.
In COLD weather a second cycle of the key is needed or the override switch. But the couple seconds are worth it.

Hope you ordered from an authorized dealer. Lots of cko junk out there.
