Hard Start after some maintenance

Plug in the block heater and see if that solves it or lessens the time it is smoking.
If so, that will point towards the glow plugs not warming it enough.

Is there any correlation of engine coolant temperature and smoke?
Does the smoke smell like diesel fuel or like coolant?

If the heater has no effect, I would get a fuel pressure gauge on the ip inlet so that you can read the pressure. Monitor it when starting with smoke, then when the smoke is gone.
