Fuel leak @ filter manager

I know I've had a fuel leak for a while now but haven't been able to find it. After reading through someones thread (I can't remember whose) I tried shooting some compressed air from the drain hose (w/ the t valve open of course) to force the fuel back to the tank.

After removing the fuel cap I blew and saw fuel shoot through one of the hoses I had my "t" for my fuel pressure gauge. Loose hose clamp. Tightened it and then tried it again.

This time fuel shot through the black screw down ring (the one the holds the filter in place. I took it off and found that the o ring/gasket on the filter blew out. I reseated it and put it back on and tightened it back up.

I had my son hold the accelerator/rpm's at 3k and had no leaks.

Took it for a test drive then opened the hood and saw fuel leaking down the fuel heater wires.

I guess that is where my problem is. I double checked my input to the ffm and the clamp was tight. When I blew out my gasket/o ring the fuel came out the back side of the ffm ring.

I didn't look like the fuel was coming down the back but it might have been.

I'm thinking of just swaping it out to a racor 230 (I think that is what Missy suggested). My question is am I missing anything or should I do something else?

There's a small oring where the water sensor bolts on, then a larger oring on the bottom that actually seals the the heater to the bottom the the FFM housing.

Careful with high air pressure...

Rodd I had to put some paragraph spacing in there it was hurting my eyes to read it a runned together :)

I happen to like the OEM manager as a final, the WIF & heater feature are good to have IMO, I suspect the o ring behind the WIF is leaking when you said air applied how many psi ?

Old o-ring and more than normal system pressure could cause a leak.

Pics of orings:

I replaced all the o rings about 1 1/2 years ago when I did the FTB mod. I'm hoping it is one of those. I suspect that because they are newer that is why the fuel blew out the seal at the top of the filter where the canister and filter meet. That seal is much weaker than the o rings.

Well I think I got'r done. I pulled the housing cleaned it and replaced the o rings again and no leaks (so far). Time will tell.

Sounds like you got it, but just wondering:

There's a metal back up ring that goes inside the rubber ring that seals the filter to the body where the big black ring goes on the top of the filter manager. If you have the ring in the wrong position (or missing all together), the Fm will weep fuel. I'll see if I can get some pics shortly....

edit:

Here we go.

Don't ask me how I know it will weep if the backer ring is installed wrong.....:rolleyes5:

That should be part of the new filter installed. The seal should be integrated the lip of the filter metal dome with the metal piece securing the rubber.
Make sure it is off the housing when the filter is changed. The seal will get pinched when you tighten the black retainer ring. Unfortunately, if you tighten it without seating the filter properly, it won't seal quite right after you tried it 2nd time. At least that is my experience.

There is a new style filter with a plastic dome on top, this filter does not need the black retainer ring. Keep it somewhere safe just in case you cannot get the same type in the future.

Any other suggestions besides cleaning it? I just finished the Ftb and relocation mod and it's leaking from the top under wot and drippage is occurring from the heater all the time, but worse under wot. New o-rings, but I've never seen that metal ring in the years I've owned this truck.

Metal ring is part of the "old" fuel filter gasket.
Cheapest option is to replace the entire fuel filter assembly with a new take off part from PENINSULAR. $85 plus shipping. Old one is worth a couple bucks as scrap aluminum. You can't get a new heater for that cheap...
As yours is modded, replace the fuel filter for a new gasket. Heater will have to be replaced unless it is the o-ring that is leaking. Mine was leaking from the wires...
Again buy one for heater parts... Or re-mod it...

Hello Treegump. I picked up a new Stanadyne Fuel Heater with O rings and about 6' of wire (perfect for your relocation efforts) from Diesel Store dot com. Current price is $59. Shipping to me was $10 but they are in Bolingbrook IL (just south of Naperville) so you may save some money there if it's too far to just drive by.
It doesn't show on their vehicle search so use the part number STA31341 instead. On line it shows as a TOP Loading heater but it works for both top and bottom (I just got off the phone with them).
Good luck.

Ran out of 'edit' time searching for pictures.
Here's a picture of the Heater in Top mount configuration.

Heres a B4 and after of my relocation (Thanks Bruce [racedaymechanic] for the idea to mount forward where you Racor set up is).
