97 Tahoe condenser recommendations

This is how far I can get the original tube to fit in the new condenser.

No problem slipping it into the old condenser.

Do you have the P/N on the condensors (AC Delco and Four Seasons) that you got? Am about to put in a new AC system in my tahoe for these hot SC days we have been having.

I don’t have a 4 Seasons in my hands yet, but it is part number 7-4721.
 
Since I can’t make progress on the condenser until the new parts come in I decided to prep the accumulator for installation.

First I wrapped it in 1/8” foam insulation tape everywhere but where the clamp will be.

Then I wrapped the foam with aluminum duct tape.

Hopefully this keeps a little of the turbo heat out of the AC system.
 
Oh yeah, that new part is made SO wrong. Just wanna be allowed to hit someone with the wrong part they make right in the mouth sometimes.
I know, violence is not the answer, and 2 wrongs dont make a right. But sometimes a left and a right do a good enough job you don’t need the uppercut.

I finally have a condenser. They got the new AC Delco condenser in and it had the same problem - couldn’t get the orifice tube in the pipe. Then we opened up the Spectra Premium condenser....there was already an orifice tube in the pipe! I pulled it out with some needle nose pliars just to make sure it would come out and it did. So I walked out the door with the Spectra Premium condenser and the new 4 Seasons VOV.

I got them home and compared the condenser to the stocker. The Spectra actually has bracketry very similar to the stock one! Huh. One interesting difference is a bung for a switch.

So then it was time to install it. Since it had factory style brackets I had to reverse the mods I did earlier to the cushions. Luckily they came unglued without too much trouble.

I installed the condenser and.... son of a b....it doesn’t fit tight! It’s 1/2” short!!

So I dug through my cushion pile and found some that looked like they would work. Yep, they worked great! I have the part number on the cushion, but no idea what I got them off of.

So then I got it all hooked up and drew a vacuum. 15 minutes later and it had lost 5” of vacuum. Dammit!! Then I looked and I had the cap off of that extra bung fitting for some reason. I got out a shraeder valve tool on it and tightened it about 1/4 turn, then oiled and installed the cap. Drew it down to 30” again and 40 minutes later it’s still there, YES!!

Tomorrow I’ll swap the accumulator, vacuum for a couple hours and then charge it!
 
I had a thought on that extra port: I wonder if I could get a pressure switch with a particular setting (or an adjustable switch!) and use that in conjunction with the electric fan clutch and controller that @akdieseldriver found so the fan could supplement the AC system at low speeds? It would be extra cool if it could work with a vehicle speed sensor or an RPM switch so it would turn off once you were rolling....just a thought.
 
I don't get notifications anyways so ... The controller has a built in AC function but I believe it turns it on and that's it. If you could find a switch that works with rpm you could just interrupt it

I don’t recall from your thread....how did you hook up the controller to AC - the control unit? Or did you not use that function because you’re you know....in Alaska?
 
Look up a 1995 gas 350 Yukon. The switch on the condenser (where you have a cap now) would force the recurc door closed with high head pressure. It could be used for an aux fan if you can get one to fit with engine and trans oil coolers. The calabration on the switch is perfect to run the aux fan. Road speed should cool the condenser and switch the fan off.

The high pressure safety is on the compressor.
 
I went home during lunch and replaced the accumulator. It held vacuum for 15 minutes.... so I started the pump again to dry the system. By the time I get home it will have been under vacuum for about 4.5 hours. All I need to do is charge the system and reinstall the grill. Then I’m ready for the next thing to break! :rolleyes:
