4.3L blows tons of white smoke

Here's a trick for getting the distributor drive tang in the right location. Assuming you know where the rotor should point at #1 TDC (and #1 piston is there), turn the rotor as you lift it out of the tang and drop it back down. That will move it 1 tooth. Repeat that until it drops where you want it to. Takes less than 2 minutes when you get the hang of it to go a full turn. Beats the laying across the engine with a screwdriver and flashlight trick.

On edit: Tim, you're this far. Get the reman unit. You'll be glad you did.

Here is the mess I have......any one want to come over to help.

On edit..I wonder if this will correct my problem.....

I marked the location of the cap and rotor. This should put me spot on. It might take a few tries to get it perfect...I don't want any codes when I fire it up.

The little ears that the cap sits on is broke....looks like it has been broke for awhile. A reman unit is 100 bucks. Don't know if I can super glue it back or not. I think the heads are ok so I am goin for just the intake. I could actually remove the intake bolts out by my fingers....well most of them. They should be around 12-15 ft lbs right?

If Im thinking of the right tabs mine were steel.

well another set back, had to remove the spider things for the injectors....I was trying to clean some debris out and the plastic nozzle came off and went inside the intake port of the head......had to remove the stupid intake again. Wonder if I can still use the gaskets? haven't fired it up yet but it was torque down to 12 ft lbs......

are you just changing the intake gasket?

yep, based on what the gaskets showed, I was losing alot of coolant and decided I would just change the intake gaskets. The head gaskets I hope are good to go. I don't really want to go through this again, but I am willing to take a chance. If I hadn't found the loose bolts on the intake and the deformed gasket I would have replaced the head gaskets...even tho I am afraid the exhaust manifold bolts will break on me.....:nonod:

Its a lot of trouble to get the heads off, all the brackets up front that hold the power steering pump and everything else belt driven need to come off. Pulling the intake off is cake compaired to pulling the heads.

If you do ever take the heads off my exhaust manifold bolts looked bad. Some were so bad on mine I had to use vise grips. They all came out easy though. Even the one I tristed the head off came out with just my fingers when I pulled the manifold off.

Ive got a big fat factory manual for my jimmy if you need me to look something up.

I have been finding so much wrong with this Jimmy, the fuel injection was jerry rigg....over sized oring to make it run....

They must have gone cheap on them, mine is a 92. Everyone who has a jimmy with problems always has the newer body style.

It looks like someone has been under the hood of this thing....we bought it a couple of years ago for my wife to deliver mail with. The distributor was broken but working, the fuel injection was working but jerry rigged, both of thos items would cost me 425 bucks, lucky I found a kit to repair the fuel injection. Decided to install new wires, new water pump, new hoses all the way around and of course the radiator had a dang hole in it.....if the heads need to be replaced I will scream...you will hear me up there i bet......lol:mad2:

By the time the sound waves from your scream make it up here you should have the heads off. ):h

I knew the guy who had my jimmy and his grandma had it before him since new. They said every always worked perfect and never once had a problem with it. From what everything looked I dont think anything was ever messed with.

When I rebuild it one of these days maybe Ill get some exhaust manifolds and a turbo off a tycoon.

should have done the head gaskets, this makes me pure sick. Was hoping it was just the intake due to how loose they were and the gaskets were junk.

Now you gotta be thinking about pulling both heads and getting a valve job done while you're at it. And some good Crane umbrella valve guide seals to replace those horrible factory ones.

I was going to replace my factory valve seals but didnt, so far the stock seals are holding up.
