I currently run a T-5 from an S-10 behind my SBC 350 in the '71 truck. I used the stock bell housing, but purchased a different clutch disc to match the splines of the T-5. Also I needed a custom spacer, which is available for about $100, I cannot remember who made it though...

I pulled two covers and you all are right, one was black RTV and the other cork gasket.
In that case I will just use black RTV and clamp it down :)

I added an extra ground to my setup. It cannot hurt. But I ran mine from the Block to the battery negative on both sides. Then an added run from the passenger battery - to the frame rail.
You can't have enough clean grounds on these trucks!!!

It's been a couple of weeks... But I finally fired her up for the first time after the new Duraterms were put in.
WOW! Just a small puff of white after sitting for three weeks and in the 30s last night, so the motor was cold cold. Amazing. I should have done this a while ago :)

Weighing in late here.
Don't blame the HX40, there could have been a number of reasons the head gasket failed. Time, age, coolant condition, etc.
Puts some new gaskets on with ARP studs and you will be fine.

I was rested tonight and more patient. With a long reach I got it without having to take the fender out. There was juuuust enough room to get my arm/hand in there.

I took the turbo out and all the related air intake parts, but I cannot reach it. The exhaust downpipe will not come out, so that is not an option, I tried.

Yes, just remove the front grill and that will provide all the access you need.
... Depending on your old hard lines they could be a bear to get out. Save money for the cursing jar :)
