My 2005 Yukon XL

My 93 has this issue were the clutch magnet is getting weak. when the engine is cool I can turn the ac on and it will work fine until it has to cycle. then it doesn't have the strength to suck the clutch back in to spin the compressor. I have another clutch for it, just haven't gotten out there to swap it out!

with your clutch hub removed, if you can get to the pulley bearing and pop the seal off to expose the inner rollers of the bearing I would attempt to grease that bearing. chances are it got hot enough to cook the grease. the bearing is press fitted into the pulley just like the old steel idler pulleys only this bearing is special for the clutch (size wize).

Ideally the clutch wears out just as it goes out of spec. But assembly line adjustment errors happen. You might be able to adjust the clutch. The he problem is, if you get it to tight, it won’t want to shut off. So if you adjust it, go from the middle to the upper range of clearance. Adjust it same procedure as when replacing one.

When done adjusting, hit it with a liberal dose of brake cleaner. If it still has issues then order up the new assembly.

Yeah, your right. I seem to recall seeing tiny shims in the center of the hub where the shaft of the compressor goes in. I'm sure there is a spec for the air gap, I would need to find that info. most likely the thickness of a business card like setting points gap.

This looks like what might be happening to my compressor. it looks like the clutch coil started to break down and begin shorting out internally making a lot of heat. this on top of slowly releasing the hub allowing it to start slipping which created more heat destroying everything.

today I was out there messing around with my ac on the truck trying to figure out why it would stop cooling after running a while. I had it idling with the ac on with my gauges connected to see what was happening... well the ac is fully charged but after about 20-30 minutes the clutch starts to slip barely turning. give it a little rev and it grabs and spins again but another couple minutes it start slipping. my magnet coil is giving out. eventually will burn out. I just need to get me a clutch tool so I can swap it out with the clutch I have on the old compressor that leaks.

with that much heat on the front of your compressor I would pay close attention to the front seal. it may have gotten hot enough to make it start leaking. Normally there is no pressure on the front seal, only oil from the system but when the piston rings on the compressor start to bypass like an old engine with blow by, pressure from the refrigerant will build up on the front seal and start weeping.

Very true. When I got everything off, all looked well on the snout of the compressor. I guess we will find out down the road if it did take some life off the compressor or will eventually leak!
