Back in the day, we used to jack around and switch steering wheels to things kids at the time, thought looked cool.

I remember seeing items such as that I thought was “ cool “ but coukd never afford such as that, I had to have my money to buy that next jug.

You and me both. But I was married at 17. We didn't have money to blow on steering wheels. Even though I worked mostly 50 hour plus weeks.

I always wondered how the steering actually went with the small diameter steering wheels a lot of guys used back then.
. They came with large diameter steering wheels for a reason.

I once did some kind of a trade and got a smaller wheel for a 69 Nova I once had, dont remember the diameter, rim was a softer kind of a material and the Nova had PS, I really liked the feel of that smaller wheel.
Seemed steering was a little faster too.

I actually had a smaller steering wheel on the 69 Impala. Forgot about that.

I used to use the loader to pick it up by the bumper to change tires.

One time I picked it up by the back bumper and the wheels stayed on the ground for far longer than they should.

That involved a little repair work

Finally got around to replacing the encoder motor in the ‘99 transfer case. Bit of background first. After Paveltolz and I installed the new 6.5 Optimizer, I had installed a new AC Delco encoder motor, but it did not work and left the parking pawl buzzing when I tried to put it back into park. Towed it over to the local mechanic and he pulled the encoder motor, tested it and got nothing. He installed my old encoder motor and got all but 4 Low. He thought a new encoder motor would get me 4 Low. I called AC Delco and they sent me a new encoder motor. Finally got around to installing it today and got the same result we did after installing the engine. I reinstalled the old encoder motor and it’s back to 2 High, 4 High and AWD.

To install the new encoder motor, I had to rotate the shift shaft. I rotated it back to its old position then the new encoder motor went on. Not sure if that had anything to do with it, but the old encoder motor went back on easily.

I’m giving up on the 4 Low for now. All the other positions are confirmed working. Final tease, the ABS was working on the last test drive. Tested it in multiple locations, including on the grass in my backyard and it is pumping. Brakes are working good after the repair last weekend.

Another postive, the learning curve on the install was steep. The second go around I had the old encoder motor installed in just 38 minutes.

is there any way to test the function of the encoder motor out of the vehicle? maybe leave one installed but connect the harness to the one in hand? two encoders from ac delco non functional, I wonder if there is a wiring or switch issue, I assume there are no codes present that would prevent the new one from functioning?

Our mechanic in Montana did a test outside the vehicle touching plug posts with power leads and he said that he got nothing. Of course there is a sticker on the encoder which says “testing or operating outside the vehicle could damage the motor.”

I guess the only other way to test the new encoder would be to put it in another vehicle.

The buttons flash as if they are sending signal to shift, but no shifting occurs. I tried shifting in Park and then neutral, but when I went back to park with engine on, it buzzes the parking pawl. Had to shut down to get it into park.

If I remember right. On the last one I replaced, I had to run a brown wire to up by the shifter someplace.

It was ACDELCO or GM. But was an upgraded newer version. Ibthinkmit even came with the wire.

You're thinking of the front actuator on the differential. There was a kit you could get to convert to the newer style.
