5.7 diesel up and running

Thanks jay.I’ll definitely look into that and give it a go.Yesterday on eBay I came across a new elastomer insert drive governor cage which does away with the flex ring along with a o-ring/seal kit.I have a new old stock 3271 pencil injector pump that doesn’t have much use on it.It has no E tag on one of the governor screws like my current pump does so I want to take it apart and get rid of the flex ring altogether and set it aside for when I do need it.I also bought the updated idle spring kit that I’ve used on other pumps in the past.

Today I made a stab at replacing the old fuel tank sending unit in favor of a updated version with the water in fuel sensor. The old fuel line hoses are gone now.I got rid of all that along the chassis.Tomorrow I hope to install the new hoses and get the water in fuel wiring started. The old sending unit has a paint gun screen upon it that my father installed many years ago.

I think this will be a great feature when I finally have the water in fuel harness all in place. The new fuel lines are installed along the chassis up to the sending unit. The wiring connector is in position at the sending unit.I just need to run the harness along the chassis now and into the cab.I also have some brass fittings to go from 3/8 Barb to 1/8 npt which is what the lift pump uses upon the frame.Right now it has 5/16 Barb to 1/8 npt but I’m changing out those fittings tonight.

Today the new fuel hoses and water in fuel wiring was installed along the chassis. The 3/8 Barb-1/8 npt fittings were installed into the electric lift pump under the truck so all went okay with that.Just a matter now of getting the wiring in place inside the truck in regard to the water in fuel option and that’ll be completed.I used some Adele isolator clamps to keep the fuel lines secure to the chassis.

Last night I decided to purchase a set of used pencil injectors from a guy I chat with overseas. They look to be in pretty good shape.I’ll clean them up when they arrive.Total was around $250 delivered.

Can ya figure a way to test them? I never rebuilt that type, is that doable?
I have a new pop tester here I can try them on when the injectors arrive.I read the opening pressure on those pencil injectors is 1700psi and the later model poppet nozzle injectors is 1000-1225psi depending on the year.

I have heard they are a throw away type of injector.Once the needle and seat wear out they are done. There’s no real way to renew the internals if they are worn out completely. Some people say they are rebuildable and one guy told me they are not.You can take them apart, clean them up in a ultrasonic cleaner and reset the pressure but that’s about it.I have seen a couple YouTube videos on how to adjust them after taking them apart.

One video I found shows once you’ve adjusted them to the proper opening pressure you tighten down the center section until it bottoms out and while pressurizing them on the test stand you can find out if the tip drips fuel or if it’s just damp. They say if the tip is just damp your in good shape. It means the needle and seat are still perfect.
