While looking for right tranny mount I found out that a 4l80e tranny comes in a six speed. Probably nothing new to some, but my question is what has to be done to the computer to accomadate the extra gears? Also, is anyone running one yet and how much fuel mileage gains? They are rather pricy so fuel mileage would be a must. I see a 6.5 with this tranny behind it(stand alone controller) in my 11mpg 360 AMC jeep before my chevy gets one. Thats highway mileage! Thanks

The 6 speed 4L80E combo doesn't net you any fuel mileage gains as it does nothing for the OD ratio(4th is = to 6th in the conversion). The conversion kit simply engages the OD unit in 1st and 2nd gear as a gear splitter. Now if your talking about the 6L80E/6L90E, that is a whole different story.

Ok, I misunderstood the gear splitting of a 4l80e, so what is required programming wise to make a 6l80e work in my 97 and will a stock one hold up to a mild 6.5. I would imagine it would seeing its behind caddie cts ect. Are the mounts the same as the 4l80e? or are adaptor plates required?

The 6L90E comes behind the new LGH DURAMAX in the vans, so yes it will hold up(doubt the 6L80E would as it is meant for the 5.3's and a few other gassers). It will bolt right in no problems, but the problem is how to make it shift. The 6L80E/6L90E use an internal TCM that is built into the valve body, and it uses GM CAN BUS for communications to the TCM. Last I heard there was no box out there to talk to the TCM, so there was no way to use one unless you can do a swap to a TCM that uses 06+ CAN BUS.

Yup, have a buddy that bought a roll over and tried to use the 5.3/ 6l80e as stand alone in a kit car- none available. He yanked it for a 6.0/4l80e.

Wow, how new is that? He just did this in march/ april and couldn't find anything. If your interested and he still has it for sale I'll get you his number. He lives in Columbus,Oh.

I'm not ready for any big projects and parting with cash at the moment, as I'm awaiting back surgury #4 and hopefully this results in my being able to do this project to jeep first. Doubling fuel mileage on it would make me feel like the equipment would pay me back. Thanks for the info Ferm and hope you are recovering nicely as well. Gonna check out that controller and have all the research ready.

Pretty sure they just released it this year. It was in beta September of 12, and I think it came out in March of this year. It isn't cheap at $850. If he was doing a 5.3L 6L80E swap out of a donor truck, then I see no reason he couldn't have used it so long as he stuck with the drive by wire and used the donor trucks ECM and associated components.

Hope all goes well with the back.

Ferm:
It was a roll over, and after yanking engine and tranny he dropped the remains at a recycling yard, thinking no biggie. OOPS! I sent him an email last night asking, just in case, and he already sold it. Already wrecked the Bugatti kit car too! 120 into a pole sideways. Left leg and 3 broken ribs, he didn't want to tell me cause he knew I'd laugh at him- I did. Wife told him let the tow yard keep it or she was gone, good thing she's cute he said.
