what kind of m.p.g. are you getting?

gm guy.... My trunk does not have a chip. And i guess im just not luckey enough to get excellent mileage like you guys. I will say that i filled last week and i got 16.8 m.p.g. My pevious best was 15.7. One thing i have been doing lately is driving faster . i put the r.p.m.'s at 2200. I have a manual torqe converter lockup switch. So when use that it drives better too. I just have to remember to put it in the stock side of the switch when i stop. You guys have been a lot of help. I just cant figure out why i dont get 20 or more, no matter what i do. Thank you much

IIRC you mentioned getting better mileage when filling up in another location, which makes me wonder if the supplier in your area has some lower cetane fuel.

i have had the truck for 27 months and ive put a little over 5000 miles on it. i only drive it when i need to haul something. So that is part of my problem. However the last 4 tanks have all been at the truck stop at highway 98 and u.s. 54. I just think my truck is that way. I have had other 6.5's Never had one this bad. However the power is a lot more with this truck. It must be the 4.10's. And 4 inch exhaust. Now on the u.l.s.d. I have heard it both ways. As far as loss of mileage. I have only went on one trip to michigan. So it must be the kansas fuel. I also dont drive it much because it cost about 30cents a mile. and my 98 olds cost about 12 cents a mile. I just love the old g.m. Not the new g.m. though. I also think engines are not all the same. They are built at different times so the process is not the same. Maybe different torque on the bolts. Im very happy with the truck. But not with the mileage. Thank you much And keep the ideas coming

My personal experience changing from a 180 to a 195 Tstat got me a solid 3MPG better. At less than $15 it was the best thing I did for the Burb (while it had a 6.5 anyway) Your results may very?
my truck wants to overheat with a 180 in it and it was with a 195 and thats drivin unloaded its all stock coolant system but it shouldnt try to over heat even if it is stock and unloaded right?

I have noticed my gps says I am doing 60 mph but the trucks speedo says I am doing 64 mph. I tend to believe the gps as being accurate since it gets a radio signal to calculate speed when the truck is mechanically calculated. Maybe that is GM's way of helping us to avoid speed traps and ensuring the warranty is up sooner than it should be. Guess I need a trip meter type gps that logs driving distances over several weeks since I can go more than a month between fill ups:WTF:. I should be getting better mileage since fixing my crossover exhaust leak. I will know more by march 9th as it will be a trip to Heath diesel on that date and will know my city and highway mileages in US gallons since I have been buying fuel in Washington state lately. On my last fill up I topped it up completely. Something about I buy fuel in the USA as I get every 5th tank free compared to the cost in Canada. What sucks is it is Alberta oil and flows down the pipe to Cherry point refinery in Blaine Washington. You would think that we would get better pricing being Canadian but NO we get screwed on our own oil. Now Alberta wants to run a pipe to the coast thru BC. I say we siphon off 10% as a cost of transit and lower our fuel prices doing it !!!!

Try again, not sure I understand.

At the risk of getting political in a non political thread. :rolleyes5:
The CA government totally controls the fuel prices and taxes the hell out of it. If you want to fix that stop electing socialists. We in the US are paying out the wazu for fuel right now cause the US gov cant not mess with capitalism. The more they fiddle the more screwed up it is. i.e. warm winter and fuel prices are up? :WTF: Ok enough of this back the thread already in progress. :mad2:

If you are overheating you have issues other than the T Stat. 180 or 195 if the system cant move the heat its going to boil just a wee bit sooner. You need some Solder Seal two part radiator flush and neutralize. Sadly the EPA made them quit making it a few years back. :( There is one on the market some that you leave in for a week (not when its below freezing) and then flush out, works fairly well but the brand escapes me at the moment.

ok i have a 180 tstat in my truck and even with it in, my truck will want to overheat in the summer without a load. just imagine a 195 tstat

X2 what L98TPI said.
Take the radiator completely out of the truck and clean it. You will be shocked by all the crap that comes out of it. I spent 45 minutes with compressed air blowing the dirt out of mine. Behind the oil cooler is the worst area. After you give it the "blow job" then clean it with scubbling bubbles (I think is what other members have done). I just washed mine down with a good stream of water.
This is free so try it first. If you still have overheating it might be the radiator need roding out or replacement. You can go crazy after that with new WP,Dmax fan, clutch....ect

I would like to get better MPG also. If a 195 t stat would help I would give it a try. Like other I'm already running at 210 not towing. So I might also need to do a system flush and clean.
I have seen some people put CLR in there cooling system to clean it out. I just don't know if I want to try that.
Anybody got any input on that idea?

I wouldn't fret over 210 if its gets to 230 then worry. Diesels love heat, just shy of oil breakdown of course. Get them hot fast and they will live longer and be more efficient.
CLR is good stuff I have used it to clean coffee makers and espresso machines. And the usual stuff. I see no reason why it would not work in a cooling system. How much to use and how long is the question. And follow up with stop leak in the antifreeze for the pinholes its going to uncover. No really its a good way to predict if you rad is about to blow, clean out the scale.

Hey, I have a question about heat. Now i see people talk about to much heat. I had 180 stats and my truck would never go above 190. Now i have 195 dual stats, and even last summer here in kansas 110 degrees many times over the summer, i never got above 200. Now my question is is that a bad thing? Like over the winter it always reads less than 190? Now one more thing. On my original post abot fuel mileage. Could my bad mileage be caused by fan never shutting off? I hear it always wooshing? Its not loose and when the engine is off it spins freely. But i always thought when the truck is cold i shoud never hear the fan? Right? Just a thought. Thank you

Does it roar? I can't say that I hear mine until it engages, which is very seldom. When it does engage it makes a real roar.

If it is locked up then it would hurt economy.

I am having the same issue, but for different reasons. I want to get my little Isuzu a 195* tstat but can't find one. It runs really cool, like 180ish.

Sometimes its hard to tell if a fan clutch is bad by turning it by hand unless its REAL bad. A back to back compare with another truck would work. I have gone through 4 on my Dodge in the all most 20 years I have had it. The last one went from getting tight to dang near chewing up the rad so fast it was scary, changed it in the Zone parking lot.
I knew a gut that would check them by holding the fan still at idle when hot. I do not reccommend this. And no his nick name was not Stumpy :cornut:

Yes my fan always roars. Always ,when i give it fuel.Cold or hot. Is there a way to check it to see if its right? Thank you

On my cummins in my work van (4bt) I went to the auto parts store and justed had them bring out diff ones til I found one that physically looked the same and got it in a 195*
