Vegetable Gardens

Figured I would post here for today's adventure...

My wife and younger son (proud owner of the 68 chevy), out of the blue decided today to build a circular flower bed around the tree in the front yard and build a long planter box across the house in front of our narrow porch. as soon as I got home from work I was told to take them to home depot to pickup some bags of mulch and red colored bricks to go around the tree.

Picked up 30 bricks and 4 bags of black mulch, trimmed out around the tree with the weed wacker and placed them around the tree in about a 2ft radius to get an idea how many more they needed. tomorrow my son will start digging up the ground around the tree to break up the soil and level the area for the bricks.

He decided to do a planter box in the front so the dogs won't eat all his plants. I estimate the size to be about 50' by 2-3ft wide, I told him that as soon as we get the box built I would take him to the local nursery to get a truck load of garden soil to fill it with. much cheaper than trying to buy it all by bags at the hardware store! He's been wanting to get something going for plants.

Wife also wants to lay a pebble rock bed around the two rows of shrubs we have in the front too.

it got dark on us today, but I will get some photos tomorrow after work.

My son and I have been slowly whittling away at getting the ground around the tree ready for the flower bed. He's dug out some where the dirt was mounded up around the tree. I did some of that today using the pic-axe breaking up the dirt and pulling up all the roots from all the saplings that had been growing around it. They used to be really thick around one side, Not really sure how to kill them without hurting the tree.

I was planning on placing a root/weed barrier on the ground before laying more dirt and mulch. with this much of a root system, now I'm not so sure a barrier would help.

what are y'all's thoughts on how to go about this? the bed will be a double layer of red bricks surrounding the tree about 2ft and leveled off with mulch within that area.

Here's a couple of pics of me and my son pulling up sapling roots and loosening the ground around the tree. we got the ground about level with the rest of the yard, but these roots are thick! these pics don't do justice, it looks like a hole full of roots, but that's level ground with the roots that pulled up with the pick axe.

Wondering if using the weed burner 9000 will work. just burn them down with the torch and smooth it all out. our entire yard is laced with all these oak tree saplings
