Looks like I'll see how good their warranty is. These are 12 months old and have 12K miles on them.

Fairly unusual for the sidewall of a KO to bulge. Wonder if the process contributed to that. Glad you found it the easy way Mike.

Truck was shimmying down the freeway. Couldn't feel it in my steering wheel, so I turned down the side view mirror and I could see the bulge.

We were picking up a load of tile for a bathroom project. I drove home via surface streets, about 8 miles. Installed one of my old BFG ATs that these replaced.

Processed a warranty claim today. Tires were bought June 2013 and have approcximately 10,800 miles on them. I do take them offroad. Tread wear looks to be about 60% remaining.
 
They contacted me again today asking for pics. Let's see, I uploaded and attached the photos to their warranty claim. I sent them photos via yahoo e-mail off my work computer. Today I just sent them from my iPhone. So far, unimpressed.

The rep said he needed to see the tread by the bubble because a nail or puncture could cause the damage to bleed over to the sidewall. He should have the pictures now as they clearly went through. Also, the pictures show no nail and in fact the tire is still inflated to 60 psi.

Not holding my breath on this one.
 
Why not send him a copy of the link to here? Manufacturers tend to get the ball moving when they realize the problem is getting attention.

Thank you for sending pictures of your tire. I’m sorry but the cause of failure is not covered in our limited warranty. This is caused by a casing separation and may be due to air migration from a crown cut or puncture. Casing belt separations are not covered in our warranty.

There's no cut or puncture in the tread. Tire never lost air, ever.

Buying these retreads was an experiment. Never again. Based on the observed tread wear, these tires would have lasted 24k to 30k miles. I cannot recommend TreadWrong and will never buy a retread tire again.
 
Sorry to hear it. That sucks. I had considered them, but seeing these failures, and especially the poor responses, tells me I made the right choice getting new Bridgestones instead. Please do share this thread with them.

The reason why this tire is not under warranty is because this is a casing failure. We do not warranty casing failures. We warranty and and stand behind the tread on the casings.

Translation: we warranty our tread, not the casing we apply them to. We didn't make the casing.

Major flaw in that business model.

Of all the sets of BFG ATs I've had, most have had a failure failed due to a belt separation in the tread. Most of those occurred within the last 25% of tread wear. As BFG no longer offers a warranty on their AT tires, I'll be looking at the Cooper ATs.

We inspect our casings thoroughly. You have driven on your tire for more than a year. We cannot warranty damage to the casing done in this time. This was not a problem in the first year of ownership. The tire was shipped to you in good working condition. I’m sorry that limited warranty does not cover this failure.

Translation: It's not our casing, so we don't warranty it. It was shipped to you in good condition and you drove on it a year, so it was good.

Thanks TreadWrong for highlighting the flaw in your business model. I buy the whole tire, not just the tread. There is natural apprehension about the used portion of the tire and what the remolding process does to it. They have to price cheaply to overcome that. Get fooled once, shame on you.....next.
 
When you pull the tire off the rim, inspect the carcass very closely for preexisting punctures that do not also exist in the outer recap.

Carcasses that are punctured are not candidates for recap and are supposed to be discarded. Shadier companies will "patch" a punctured carcass, either before or after teh recap process.

If you do find evidence of a preexisting puncture in the carcass, send them a picture and include your above "we inspect our casings thoroughly" email.

Their "limited warranty" on their site states they do not cover belt failures. This is clearly not a belt failure but a punctured/failed carcass allowing air to escape and separate the recap. Carcass in their terminology = case.

I have a little bit of experience with the recap community and what I'm seeing there is a carcass failure. Either damaged in the recap process or a punctured carcass that got through QC to the recap floor.
 
Great White, thanks for the feedback.

I have two other BFGs mounted on the same rims with about 25% tread left. I will run those to get the rest out of the remaining TreadWrongs and then I'm done with them. That is if the tread that is separating on the outside edge of the RF tire does not progress leading to another failure.

Basically, I'm done with TreadWrong and I'm done with BFG ATs. I will try the Cooper ATs as they have a 60K mile warranty. These K2500 Suburbans are heavy and it will chew through the Coopers long before the warranty is up.
