Transmission Help

My dad is having problems with his truck. Feels good to be able to help him after learning all that I have from him about automotive repair.

What kind of transmission does a 95 GMC Sonoma 4x4 4.3 TBI have. Also I will be replacing the transfercase. Are there any tricks to this? I have already done the pump rub fix on my diesel so I think this would be a bit easier.

I found out it's either the 4l60E for auto and the 5lm60 for the manual.

What is it doing? The drivetrain in that truck is fairly simple to work on as well.

Not sure what its doing, He's on his way to chicago from california. All I have been told is that something is not engaging correctly and that there is a god awful noise coming from it. He stopped by a dealership and a tech there said it need to be replaced but since that was not an option he disconected some wires to it.

A broken rear snap ring in the TC will make all kinds of noise as well.

That's what I was thinking. Unless he has a slipping torque converter and disconnecting the lock-up solonoid stopped the noise.
