Transmission ground.

Okay I've been reading some posts about running a ground cable from the transmission to the engine block and I believe to the frame and battery also can anyone tell me what the reasoning behind this is or what it fixes.
 
I have read that static electricity created by rotating mass can be an issue in some applications "I'm thinking more off road here" and grounding straps to all drive train eliminates the issue however; using a grounding compound (oxi-guard or other brand) on at least one fastener between each drive train components will do the same thing as straps...
