Thoughts on 12 valve cummins

I'm considering getting a '93-'98 12 valve cummins, and it appears that '97 is the best year of the 12 valve for both comfort & power. I like the thought of a non-electronic motor, even though the automatic (if I were to get an automatic) has the 47re (electronic vs hydraulic) (8pin vs 4pin).

I realize I'm posting in a biased environment, but I thought I'd check to see why more people don't go the 12 valve route when they seem to be so "bulletproof"...

This would be my replacement truck for my duramax. Trying to cut my monthly payment & vehicle costs. I do realize I will need to invest some money/time to build/repair any 1st or 2nd generation truck of any model or size, but they appear to have proven to be durable trucks, and 12 valves seem to get better fuel mileage as long as they are left stock with minimal adjustment to the injection pump.

My main issue w/ a cummins is the noise. My neighbor in college had one and that thing shook me out of bed many mornings. I couldnt hear my 6.5L over it on the coldest mornings. If I ever get one it will be in a GM chassis w/ as many mufflers as possible.

Well, considering my exhaust ends below my rear passenger door and has no muffler or CAT on it, I'd say I don't mind the noise. ;)

The noise does suck. I can hear a CUMMINS running over my DURAMAX with my windows up sitting at a redlight. The biggest reason many don't have a CUMMINS is because it comes wrapped in a DODGE wrapper. The CUMMINS is a great engine, not many will argue that. But the DODGE wrapper it comes in is subpar to say the least. And the 47RE in stock form leaves MUCH to be desired to say the least. And despite what many think, the 12 valve CUMMINS will never match a common rail engine for all out power WITH driveability. You can easily push a 12 valve up to the 400HP range with a fuel plate and injectors, but it will never be as smooth in power delivery as a common rail engine with a good tune. They do run for a long time, the biggest factor will come down to how good of shape is the DODGE it's housed in.

My lbz is straight piped and 5" but it is still quieter than most cummins IMO.

A stock cummins isn't really a powerhouse but they are consistent and long lasting.

The 12v Cummins is the Chevy 350 of Diesels.

The best one is the Uber Rare 98. You get the Updated Interior, but still have a 12v under the Hood. If you get an Extended Cab, the Rear Doors will Open too.

I never trust anything that's been wetted down in the pictures. Usually means the paint looks like hell.

Purchasing an old used cummins is like purchasing and old used sports car. They have been rode hard and put away wet one two many times. You might lower your payments purchasing an older cummins truck. But, all your time, sweat, blood, tears, and cash will be dumped all over the truck. In my opinion you would be better off just getting an older gas truck and a cheap commuter car.

I have a 96 12 valve and chevy adaptor I'd sell. Stick it all in your 05 Chevy?

Chevy adapter?

I'm mainly looking for a long bed, ext or crew cab, 4x4, preferably diesel especially if I continue using it as my daily driver.
