The Larry Thread

Will not fire at all. Changed the fuel filter. Disconnected the fuel line from the IP and hotwired the LP... good fuel flow to the IP so I know the sock is fine. I know I have no air in the system with the clear return fuel line into the IP. I know I am getting some fuel to the injectors... when I crack the line at the injector I get a small dribble... seems pretty week. Since the PMD is new and has been checked, the lift pump is new, I have checked the flow from the FFM to the pump the only thing left is the IP. Could the new lift pump have blown a seal or something in the IP? Or is it coincidence and the IP gave up. Any thoughts? What are the symptoms of a bad IP?

I vote for glows as well. A small amount is all you'll get at the inj. Put an ohm meter on a few and see what it reads.

One other thought is there's a screen inside the fuel fitting IIRC .

I replaced the fuel shutoff solenoid with a known good one in case that thing was acting up. No dice. I am thinking you might be on to something with the glows. When I cycled the glows repeatedly I am able to get to cough and sometimes two coughs. It has been in the thirties today. I pulled a couple of glows and they are 9g. By there condition they look to be possibly original. I was planning on replacing them anyway since I do not know there history. The thing that is odd is she started a week ago at 2degrees without being plugged in. It caught so quickly the starter had not even stopped spinning. It is odd if it turns out to be the glows that they failed so suddenly. Maybe the Heath tune with the cold weather package (extended glow time) burnt the old glows out. Maybe it was just time. I have a spare set of 60gs in the garage. Next time I get a chance I will put them in and see what happens.

9 GS aren't self regulating so the extended time probably did them in.

I never realized how important they were to an IDI... gonna check the voltage at the glow plug to make sure it did not pop a fusible link and if that is ok gonna put in the 60gs I have. Fingers crossed!

what about timing? could the PO or shop have installed it without dialing it in? would the heath tune try to adjust tuning, or no? If so, could the computers perceived timing differ from actual, and the tune sent it over the edge?

Good thought on the timing GM Guy. I did check it pre tune and it was bang on factory spec. I am planning on cranking her up a bit once I have gauges and a few other parts on her.

Thanks for all the help!

Well you guys were spot on the glows... they were dead. I got 6 of them replaced and after a little sweet talking I got my wife to help the #8 cylinder. Her hands are small enough that she could get to it with the inner fender and turbo on. She fired right up... instantly. She was running a bit rough with the #6 GP being dead. Now the #6 cylinder is going to have to wait until I do the downpipe.... maybe tomorrow if the weather cooperates.

Well got the Diamond Eye exhaust off of Little D and into Larry. I also pulled the 2.5" Heath crossover and installed a new glow plug in the #6 cylinder. Every time I see a factory downpipe I am amazed about how the factory mutilated it. I thought I would share some pics of the downpipe as Diamond Eye does not list there downpipe and exhaust fitting into a 2wd 5 lug or 6 lug 6.5 td. There is interference between the control arm itself and the mounts. The frame is also necked in a bit more than the 4wd drive and 8lug trucks so it is real tight between the manifold and frame. The downpipe fits but it does require a little massaging with the BFH and it is a VERY tight fit. The downpipe looks like it hits the frame but with a strategically placed dent it clears by less than an 1/8". After the downpipe is in the rest is gravy.

Robbing from the rich and giving to the poor. By the end of it you will have parts from all trucks switched around/mix and matched.

Hopefully that clearance is horizontal and not vertical.

Yes it is. Still rubs on the frame sometimes... when I get around to a frame off on the 2wd LD trucks I am going to notch the frame. That is what they should have done from the factory. No wonder these things would melt down with an exhaust pipe bent half shut.

The guys at the local lumber yard call me swapper... I will swap a motor in a heartbeat!

I will give you an example... we have an 88 GMC. It was given to us so she is not pretty. It was a K1500 305 turbo 400 truck. The trans was hemorrhaging and the 305 was beat. Looked around and for a parts donor and found another 88 GMC 350 2wd that had been sitting for 6+ years. Bought it $500. Went thru the 350 and new gaskets and seals. Converted the 4wd to 2wd and put the motor and trans from the 2wd GMC in. Sold $150 in parts off the donor truck and then scrapped the rest for $450. We still have that 88 GMC and she still runs strong. Looks the 2500 GMT 800 trucks. Big and burly but a 2wd.

The 69 C10 before it was restored went thru a rat rod phase. I believe it had parts from 8 or 9 different vehicles in there, some it straight from the junk yard. Ran great and was always reliable.

I have plans for Little D. It needed rear brakes, tires, shocks, etc. The frame and suspension are beat... the doors would rattle in the frame going across railroad tracks! Larry will allow me time to refresh Little D and still attend to business.

This weekend it was Gerties turn to donate a few parts to Larry:D

Installed the gauges finally on Friday afternoon and between Saturday and today got the new injectors in, the ATT turbo and the Vin F upper and lower. The ATT has been sitting to long. It is kinda hard to tell but one of the egr ports in the vin s upper was almost completely blocked with oil and carbon (that was probably a good thing!). I also found the factory boot connecting the turbo to the intake was bad. This is the second 6.5 I have seen people use grey RTV to seal a bad boot. :WTF: Took her for a test drive and wow what a difference. She hauls the mail. Hit 15psi with ease. After the Gertie experience I am not going to push her too hard for awhile. Still cannot get over that so many people feel like the ATT is laggy and smokey. I felt no lag and saw no smoke. Just power that will not stop until your foot lifts. Wow.
