I changed the injectors on the half ton today.. still lots of white smoke under acceleration and rattling.

Im at a loss as to what to do next and super pissed that I wasted 150 bucks I could have put into a GMTD scan thing. :mad2:

those passenger side injectors where a major PITA

please help!

codes 31, 33, 91, 92, 93

Sounds like fuel knock. WHile running, loosen the fuel lines at the injector 1 at a time and retighten. This should purge the air from the lines. If no good, pull injectors and look at the nozzles. If flat black and soot, they are fine. If wet and glossy, you have a bad injector.

A couple of weeks ago I had codes 91,92,93,and 94,very bad engine shake and also lots of white smoke that smelled of diesel..I completely cleaned out my fuel system from tank to fuel manager.

I decided to install new injectors and while I was at it I also decided to renew the valve cover (non)gaskets. When I pulled off the passenger side valve cover, one of my rocker arms was upside down and the push rod was just sitting there.

The culprit was one of the little nylon rocker arm retainers which was broke and allowed the rocker arm to slip over and the rod come out.

I replaced all of the retainers and the push rod.All is fine now and no codes.Might not be your problem but it sure won't hurt to redo the retainers. I think they were $13 for all of them at NAPA.

PC & I visited over multiple phone calls, we did all the "normal" trouble shooting.

Ultimately he found the nylon keeper button, and while not common, it happens; at this stage it would not hurt to check that out as well. which means injector lines have to come off again :mad2: but you are a pro at that by now

Nylon keeper button  is that what's causing the rattling?
where is that located, how does it look like? Im still licking my wounds from yesterday and procrastinating about getting the head covers off.

I want this over with already, Im tired of my old man yelling at me cause he has to drive the cummins until the chevy is fixed

'nother day under the hood in the 100 degree heat, removed valve covers and nylon retainers seem to be all in place, fired up the truck sans valve covers, everything seems right (turbo wasnt spooling but thats a different story) next Im gonna do is put everything back together but use an F lower intake instead and see if that makes any difference.

thoughts?

update

Nylon retainers are in place, put everything back together but now with an F lower intake... nothing changed, still rattles under acceleration and still shakes when I get off the skinny pedal and let it idle (not always though) loosened every injector line one by one and cyl. #7 does not make the engine shake harder when loosened like the others... some say it might be crankshaft related? or maybe bad piston rings.
I know squat about engines but maybe piston slap?

HELP!!

I wont be able to do any work on it till saturday but any input is greatly appreciated

Your timing may be off. I recall altitude adjustments would smoke white more.

What does the blow by situation look like for this engine?

Your codes are listed here.

http://www.kennedydiesel.com/readcodes.html

Given the codes I would look at why the MAP is not working. Did you disconnect the EGR as the codes are indicating an EGR issue? You have an electronic IP so checking out the codes may solve the problem.

I should have updated my signature.. no EGR, swapped my intake for an F.
guess Im gonna check the timing tomorrow if I find someone with a scanner in this s*itty old town. clearing the codes by depressing the pedals hasn't made any difference.

Do you have boost? I can't remember if that was ever resolved. Try wiring the waste gate shut to see if that helps with the shaking.

It is possible I missed this reply as I was typing my reply above.
#7 is a dead hole from your injector test. Compression test cyl #7 and swap that injector to another cylinder. See if the "miss" follows the injector. If it does you have bad injector. If not you have a bad valve or burned hole in piston aka mechanical bad ju ju in the engine requiring head removal or complete rebuild/replacement. Compression test will help you know what is going on.

Tried a different injector in #7, made no difference.. will be removing the oil pan tomorrow to look for metal shavings.
whats a good place to find a rebuild kit? I need it as cheap as possible since I've already spent a bunch trying to get it running right

I would not waste time on the oil pan. A burned valve or blown head gasket will not show up there. Pull the head then you will know. Rotate the engine to check the rod with the head off if the problem is not clear with the head off.

drop in

found a drop in engine on the bay... Im thinking it might be cheaper to swap than rebuild what I currently have. can anyone recommend a freight company? Engine's in Maine and I need it in TX.
