i just got my first cummins diesel a couple weeks ago. its a 1993 12v swapped into my 1989 chevy crew cab. i have paper work on the engine saying its got about 105,000 miles . i can service an sbc like the back of my hand, but since this is my first diesel i just wanna make sure im doing everything correctly. so i would just like to know what is the best way to service my cummins, best oil, filter, tranny fluid(five speed manual), etc. just let me know what you guys think, thanks.

15W40 ROTELLA oil, a good high quality filter such as a WIX, for trans fluid would need to know which trans you have as there could be 2 different trans that use completely different fluids, and set the valves at .010 intake and .020 exhaust every 30K miles. Do the killer dowel pin if it hasn't been done first thing though(search KDP or killer dowel pin and you will find LOTS of info for it).

You could always go with Amsoil  Go up to 25K miles with oil annaysis. Save more money than conventional

okay cool guys thanks for the info! i'll have a ton of pics and a build sheet on what i know about the swap a little later, been real busy lately

I worked for Cummins Southern Plains LTD Dallas Texas for almost six years. I would only suggest using rotella t as a second choice. When the engine was still in production for on road use (it still is in CNG applications) for new vehicles the oil Cummins recommended was Premium Blue by Valvoline. If I owned a 12v 5.9B series thats what it would get.

The dowel pin on alot of the B series was plastic not metal and posed no threat to the engine. If in fact you have a metal dowel pin REMOVE it at once!

Setting the valves is easy and the valve cover gaskets are made to last the life of the engine. If in fact they are leaking, I have found the factory Cummins gasket are the best. The feeler gauges I would use (and own) would be these, you can buy just the .010 & .020 not the whole set unless you want to.

If you would like some steps to ease the methods of setting the valves just shoot me a PM, Cummins recommended setting the valves at 50,000 for extreme and 100,000 for normal use

The dowel pin is METAL. The cam timing pin is plastic.

X2 on the valvoline premium blue oil.

For a slightly better running engine, set the valves at .08 intake, and .18 exhaust.

Please don't use cheap filters. More than once we've seen engines destroyed by lesser quality filters, and cheap oil.
I personally use fleetguard filters, and mobil1 5/40 oil.
