ON the 90 Burb J code It was bubbling in the coolant tank and rad hose hard so I thought hmmm...unusual to have a headgasket go at 100k. So I so far have the drivers side head off and it has a felpro print o sal gasket which is not a good sign. AFAIK these trucks didn't come factory with felpro gaskets so I think someone was in here already and treid fixing it which makes me wonder is the block or the heads cracked. Why me ?? It has no blow by, bubbling in the antifreeze almost immediatly at startup. Didn't seem to be buring it no antifreeze in the oil and no obviuos leaks. WTF ?

I looked up th guys phone # who owned it and left a message. Hopefully he calls back soon. Maybe he can shed some light. I got a bad feeling someone tried to fix it unsuccessfully. Why does this sh$t happen to me ?

Aces if it is a head crack they can be lock stiched. I am running a set i did my self and have not had one problem since and not lost one drop of coolant.

If it is a block, then it may be another story.

what's the best way to look for a crack send it to a machine shop ? \
I have some good news. The PO called me back and said he owned the truck from 35k miles and never had any problems with the heads and didn't even know there was one. He sold it because he couldn't get it running at all(which was the rotted fuel line) so I'm gonna move forward and pull the other head. I guess these trucks came factory with fel pro HGs ???

Have a machine shop flow check heads for cracks, looks like a gasket fail to me from the pics, if somebody in there before you as you suspect, possibly they did not know about 1 time use bolts and torque wasn't correct, and finally not enuff clamping force to keep the seal, straight edge the block have a look at this stuff also http://www.rxauto.com/index.htm mite be worth a go until you can tear it down for full diagnostics/rebuild if required

The 3- 6.2s that i've taken apart all had the blackish head gasket with the red sealer. The newer fel-pros are grey-silver without the red stuff. More than likely tty bolt failure. Summit racing sells a relitively inexpensive precession straight edge for $75.Look for cracks between the valves.

I'd be guessing the bolts too. the bolts never look stretched but of course we know different. did they use the 'right' gasket? there is a difference with the J and C. did it have the block off piece in it?

ON EDIT. I just notice in you first pic the there's no block of where the EGR goes. mine has a metal piece in there. I wonder if your chasing the EGR system.

J code no EGR. The pass side gasket looked ugly. I think Ill be ok. I feel better after talking to the PO. The engine has never been apart. I found out from a 6.2 guru that those felpro gaskets were factory . I think I am going to bolt the heads on and see what happens. everything looks really good to me so far. I was more worried when I thought somone else might have been in their trying to fix this but after a chat with a VERY nice PO I think I'm good to go. I'll have pics. I know I should wait till next week and have them checked but afte5 all the new evidence since my last post, I think I'll roll the dice. The pass HG had deterioration between the last cyl and the water passage. Hard to tell how bad cause I mauled it lifting the head of but defintlely detriorated. Please veryone keep there fingers crossed. I need a break..I'm 41 with back problems and let me tell ya...These suckers are heavy. Also anyone who reads this in the future the new Flepro HG's can go on either way BUT ONLY GO ON ONE WAY. They don't say which way but if you lay it on the head it will be obviuos.

I hope you get r done.....No since in both of us having HG problems, Mine is fixed via a rebuilt motor.

OK The bolts appear to have sealer on them. Should I use additional avaition permatex or thread sealer ? Also the torque sheet that came with the bolts said do 20ft lbs then 50 then go 90 degs more. Does that sound right ?

no extra sealant required on the new bolts. I didn't use anything but what was on the bolts when i took them out of the box.

Look like i know what i'm doing tomorrow huh? ):h

The drivers side head the precups were a little loose. Is that normal ? I mean I had to be careful they didn't fall out when I installed the head. They were coated pretty good rom Fel Pro. I think they will be fine drivers side is on. Getting dark. May concentrate on the Pass ex manifold broken studs for the rest of tonight and finish tommorow.

I'm gonna have you on the Jimmy and I'll stay on the burb. everything is fresh in my mind where it goes. Just gotta take a time out at some point to replace that tie rod on the L8000. It's shot and I don't need an OOS. I douched the inj lines on the Jimmy with PB Blaster after I powerwashed the motor so shouldn't be too bad but there is alot of rust. gonna do the injectors oon it too. Today would have been anice day for a cruise with the top off...:D

IIRC the precups are a press fit. I don't think they are supposed to be loose.

Sounds good. I"ll hunt down that book tomorrow morning before i leave for you then.

My injector liens were pretty nasty too but they all came right off. Biggest PITA will be if an injector turns in the head instead of the line turning on the injector when i go to remove them.

So how hard is the plow frame to crawl over? I was almost sitting in my engine bay when i did my IP, but i didn't have a plow frame in the way.

The precups shouldn't be able to just fall out. They have a locating tab.
