The good:
No, Engine Speed Sensor (ESS) is not a time per tooth issue like a distributor in a gas engine. Just turn it as it goes in, but just like a gasser line up the oil pump drive. Same gasket situation like a distributor. Pull it out, clean everything up, new gasket and reinstall. ez job.
The bad:
Clogged fuel filter causing a leak? No matter how clogged it should never leak. Pull the entire Fuel Filter Manager (FFM) out, go through it on a bench for that. You have a problem there if its leaking. The water I fuel sensor is a sneaky one to find. Order a kit (I think Leroy's Diesel sells them) and redo it. Get the small screen inside on the shaft while your at it. New fuel lines and hose clamps when it goes back in. Too many stories of people chasing problems to just brush that off.
The not too ugly:
With the FFM out of the way your ESS is way easier to deal with. Order the FFM kit, FFM screen, and ESS gasket and do it all at one time. Pull ffm, set aside. pull ess, clean and reinstall. Then finish ffm. This is a convenient time to add a fuel pressure gauge for future diagnostics.
p.s. any guesses what show was just on?
