hey guys,

i know a 6.5 isnt gonna beat most new beefed up trucks but i want mine to be about as fast as i can get it. I already have the 40 horse injectors, exhaust and head studs. what all have you guys done to yours to get em to really scoot down the road? my plans are a tune, bigger pump, hx35 or 40 turbo, and some sort of fuel system. anything else? dont want to blow it through the hood but i definitely dont want it to be a normal 6.5 either. obviously ill beef up the tranny as needed and add some traction bars. as much input as you guys have is appreciated

The Race Truck title and "fast" isn't fair to what you are asking of a 6.2/6.5.
You can get it to "Get out of it's own way." Several posts on this area describe just that.

Warmed over midrange hx35 or 40 turbo... In a "Race Truck"? Again misapplication of title. Race is all out biggest turbo that will light to pull hard past redline and past engine blows up line. Spool valve and high stall converter with a large turbo that won't light till past 2000 RPM. Maybe even twin turbo.

"don't want to blow it through the hood"
Gonna rain on your parade here. Unless you get the latest non-GM casting $$$$ the odds are very good the engine will blow up on it's own without help. It's an old truck with an old engine design that the bean counters hit hard - get used to it and set your expectations accordingly. Further you can't have fun if you are scared of blowing the engine. Frankly finding the limits are half the fun. The other half is updating the carnage thread... With replacement used surplus 6.2/6.5 complete engines costing only $1500 one should seriously reconsider not giving a damn about blowing the engine. It's not like it's a $6700 Cummins rebuild or more expensive complete Cummins engine replacement. (I have more $$ in the Yank converter and turbo than the current engine!)

The transmission is tougher than the 6.5/6.2 engine. Only weak point is the converter clutch and also the manual 3rd overrun clutch pack for compression braking.

Sorry you got took on the 40 HP injector BS claim. Dyno it before and after...

Even a Duramax conversion will give you frame twist issues.

Maybe add up all the $$$ you need to spend and go buy a different truck with a completely different engine and have lunch on the leftover cash. After all $$$$ is said and done you might be able to out dyno an old IDI 7.3 Ford, maybe.

Exactly my point. Just not much to look forward too with big cash in performance mods. Other platforms are a better choice for "race" otherwise shoot for decent expectations in line with what the 6.5 is.

Donno why but someone else attended a Cummins dyno day for the same reasons I did. They brought their IDI 7.3 Ford pickup and had the privilege of coming in dead last. Second to dead last was that 1995 6.2 suburban I had with the big turbo and just as much sun obscuring smoke as others were putting down with the hottest insane EGT tune I had available.

When I blew the intake silicone adapter off at full boost on the dyno everyone jumped and ran like it was going to start raining oily hot diesel shrapnel. It didn't.

Somewhere I posted a picture of the board with the 6.2 beating a 7.3. I am sure a few adjustments later that won't happen to that 7.3 again... I think it was a turbo 7.3... :D Pretty sure it had a turbo...

Vendor Unique Diesel has a 6.5 drag truck, search his web site or youtube, there are videos there... but it's not stock and not a average turbo either... running 12's ... not too bad...

12 second is not bad at all for a 6.5. That beats me by about a minute in my Hummer when I'm at my loaded 10,000 lbs!

Seth, don't think anyone here is trying to discourage you. Just know what your walking into.

Seth, if it is what you want to do and you got the pockets for it then go for it. In the end you'll have learned a lot but the bang for the buck just might not be there. I hate to open my cost tracker and enter new stuff anymore cause the numbers are painful. Your call.

Dude, go for gold. I think you can do it. Keep it realistic but the 6.5L aint a slouch. Mine by no means is the average 6.5L but I call it my race truck. It's pretty fast I think for a 6000lb truck with a gear jammer. Get rid of those 40HP injectors to increase the reliability and upgrade the turbo. Few IP tweeks, good trans shift kit and converter and you will be good to go man
