i've got the old 1 ton running good, carb will need a rebuild but otherwise perfect runner. 84 k30 with 454 and currently a th400 but it will be swapped for an sm465. truck will be used as my offroad toy (rock crawling, mud) but still needs to be able to tow respectably, 12k pounds maybe up to 15k. has a good amount of power, but as always more power is always welcome haha. curious what i should do to the 454 to get some extra low-mid range without sacrificing too much fuel economy, getting 11mpg when i keep my foot out of it with 35" tires.

i figure a set of headers with dual 3" exhaust, intake manifold (though i dont know which one), anything else i should do to it? maybe a vortec heads/intake upgrade or a dual carb setup? any and all ideas welcome, looking for some extra power

Three truck back I had a 1998 Chevrolet K3500 4X4 Dually with the fuel injected 454 and auto trans. The best fuel economy I ever got was 11.5 MPG.

It was a great truck but, I just could not afford the fuel for it anymore.

if i can stay about 10mpg that would be good enough, no truck payment for it, insurance is about 15 bucks a month and maintenance is dirt, dirt cheap and easy to do on it so i can afford the bad fuel economy, and when i return from my deployment it will no longer be the daily driver, just the toy/tow rig.

Cam always helps out for low end range. Cam, Intake, and Heads all complimenting each other will be best way to go for sure.

I had built a 94 LT1 and headers made the biggest difference of all the bolt on's that I did.

I would suggest a good set of headers. Those motors can make a lot of ass when set up right. I paid around $500 for a set of Edelbrock long tubes and they were worth every penny. The low end beans in that motor was incredible.

A good set of small tube headers will help out, and a good dual plane intake topped off with a QUADRAJET or CARTER type carb(HOLLEY's are good for power, but milage isn't there thing). As for cams a good hydraulic flat tappet from COMP is what I would reccomend. Give them a call and tell them what you want and they will help you with a cam choice and maybe even intake and headers as well.
