Poor Boy Special 6.5 Refresh

Well NVW, I doubt I have anywhere near the experience your friend has painting. I'm just going from my own experience. I have a thing for old american iron. I collect, and restore old farm tractors, garden tractors, hit n miss engines, as well as old vintage Briggs engines, and I started using hardener in my paint about 2 years ago, and noticed an immediate difference. The paint definitely had a better shine, and seamed much harder, and durable. When I get oil or gas on the paint, its not as easily affected, or dulled. I have noticed that if the paint get hit hard by something, it tends to chip when it has hardener. Overall though, the pros seem to outweigh the cons to me. Here are a few of my recent projects. The little bitty tractor (1952 Bantam), and the vintage mini bike are projects I did with my two youngest sons. My oldest son already has his own truck. They grow up so fast! Thanks

Matt

Nice. Looks like good painting to me.

I hate painting, I asked him about hardener as I had just used it for the first time. I used it so I could repaint in 24 hrs, My shop is only 5*C in winter.

I'm just passing on what he said, not saying you're wrong.

I'm with you there! Painting is a royal pain in the back side, but the results can be very rewarding. At the same time, there is nothing worse than thinking your paints turning out well, and then noticing a really nasty run that resembles Niagra Falls forming in it! Thanks

Matt

Looks good. Looks like you and Jay would get along with your Cummins looking engines:hihi:

Nevermind Leroy, he is just jealous that our projects are farther along than his :driving:
Thats pretty bad coming from a guy who's painting his next 6.5 FORD BLUE! :hihi: Say Leroy, anytime you feel like sending a P400 down my way, I'd give it a nice coat of Red paint, and I'd even break it in for you out of the kindness of my heart.
Jay, you have a project going on too? Is there a thread here for it?

Matt

I did get a little more done today. I went, and bought an HO water pump, and was determined to find out why it had a higher flow rating. It was easy to see why, as you can see in the pic below. The HO pump has a larger 4.25 in impeller as opposed to the old ones 3.875 impeller. I installed the new balancer as well, and a few other odds, and ends. Here are a couple pics. Thanks

Matt

I was reading a thread here on modifying the fan clutch to engage sooner, so I did that today. While I would like to upgrade to the Kennedy fan clutch, and 9 blade fan, it will have to wait. I added about 1/4 to the coil on the front of the clutch, as can be seen in the pics below. I also have a 180 Thermostat in the engine as well. After completing the mod on the clutch, I put black silicon back over the tab, and repainted the clutch.
I finished getting most of the brackets, fuel hoses, etc. back on the engine as well. I'm going to try to put oil in it tomorrow, and run the oil pump drive shaft with a grill, until I get oil coming out the return on the turbo. Thanks

Matt

Even I won't run the 6 blade factory fan on an old clutch. Learned the first time. Bare minimum is a new fan clutch. Fans and Hayden clutches are inexpensive. The steel 9 blade fans are on fleabay fairly cheap.

:hihi: Well, since you put it that way WarWagon, I'll put it at the top of my list once I have the truck running. The Hayden Severe duty clutches are about $100, and if I'm going to go that far, I would rather spend the extra $60 on one that engages at a lower temp. The 9 blade fans are only about $50.
I'm still curious to see what temp this clutch engages at with the modification. Thats if it engages at all, but not to worry, I watch my gauges. Thanks

Matt

This is why I hate 6 blade fans and old fan clutches. The fan and clutch went to the scrap yard bolted to this engine. Even new the 6 blade fan clutches overheated when locked in and kicked out when you needed them the most.

Thats some ugly stuff there WarWagon! How hot was the engine when that happened?

I wanted to let everyone know, Myself, my wife, and my 4 kids are leaving the country early tomorrow morning, and going to Nicaragua for 10 days. So there won't be any updates on my project for awhile. This is also one of the reasons money has been so tight on this build. You don't even want to know what this is costing. I could have bought a P400, and had money left over, for the cost of this trip. The airline tickets alone for 6 people was over 5k. I'm looking forward to this time with my family. I hear they have some very strange vehicles over there, and I'll bring back pics.

Matt

Over 210 ECT. It was at the point the fan clutch overheated and kicked out quickly followed by the radiator cap popping off in a cloud of steam before it could even be pulled over. The engine momentarily nearly locked up triggering all the warning lights and then continued to run without the starter. It had puffs of blowby after this. It took ~4000 additional miles to burn through with the oil analysis lab calling us over a critical oil sample.

Hope you have a fun vacation. Be interesting to know 'why there?'

Have a good trip. Waiting to see some of those pics...
Thanks, and I started a thread in off topic with some pictures. http://www.thetruckstop.us/forum/showthread.php?42865-Nicaragua-Vehicles&p=481875#post481875
Yeah have a good trip. Watch out for the bot fly
Thanks Leroy, and we returned with no Bot Fly!:hihi:

Well, my church asked if I would go help build a church down there for 3 days. One thing lead to another, and I decided to take my whole family. I helped the church for the 3 days, and spent a week vacationing. It really is a beautiful country with alot of neat places to go see. We road horse up the volcano in Granada, as well as taking a boat out to several of the islands there. Its very tropical, and we had a great time, while making some great memories with our children.

Quick question. Using a 5/16 socket, extension, and my drill, I ran the oil pump today. It filled the filter quickly, but with the oil pump drive/speed sensor out, there is a massive oil pressure leak there, so I was unable to get oil all the way to the turbo. What do you guys do to prime the turbo? I have an extra oil pump drive, so I could probably cut the gear off, and remove the shaft, which might allow me to use just the housing, and my extension, and socket, but was hoping for an easier way. Thanks

Matt
