For your location in Canada, 5W-40 is probably better since you are in colder weather. It will start much easier.
As far as how long it will last, only a Used Oil Analysis can determine that. The Shell Synthetic is really a Group III synthetic so by definition it is a highly refined dino oil as supposed to Group IV synthetic which is PAO based. It can probably run 5k easy but everything depends on how you drive, environmental conditions, etc. Shell won the argument that Group III can be called synthetic also.
Both 5W-40 and 15W-40 are approved for this truck. Difference is in cold state, the 5W is a little thinner than 15W (in terms of viscosity). But at hot state, they are supposed to have similar viscosity range.
