I bought this truck not running,it had a blown head gasket,put new gaskets on and it wont start,I put a new lift pump on and it is working,have fuel to injectors and glow plugs are working,new batteries,it try's to start but just won't,hooked a scanner to it and there is no codes,everything is within normal rhelms except the crank sensor reading it is 1 ml under normal.it try's real hard to start.any help or sugestions would be welcomed,thanks rich1951
 
DO NOT use starting fluid, you will ruin the glow plugs, and possibly a lot more, I've watched guys blow holes in pistons using barely any in these engines.

What rpm is the engine while cranking? this is critical.
Are you getting any smoke from the exhaust while cranking? What color?
Did you bleed the air out?- Crack the injector line nuts at the injectors. While someone else is cranking the engine over, and fuel is spraying out around the nut, tighten the nuts one at a time.
 
cranks fast enough,has white colored smoke while trying to start,i never use starting fluid,i have fuel at the injectors except cyl #6 & 8 ,they have like white smoke coming out when i crack the lines and crank it.i think i have also found a bad crank sensor,it is new but who ever put it in broke the plastic at the hold down bracket so i think it is moving,going to get a new one now
 
Welcome. Must be 94 & newer. Def replace crank sensor. Could be a bad PMD. Check ground bundle on pass intake near trans dip stick. Take it apart and clean! a good look wont fix it :hihi:
 
thanks for all the help so far but i still have a no start .here is what i have done since i last posted,put in a new lift pump,new temp sensor,new oil sending sensor,another new fuel filter,new crank sensor,new starter,new fuel lines under the intake,new fuel return lines on the injectors,took all grounds off and cleaned,new heavy duty batteries,new ecm computer,checked all connectors for corrosion and breaks,checked all fusible links,i have taken all the injectors out and checked they are ok and cleaned,took the glow plugs out and tested them they are ok,dropped the fuel tank and made sure it was clean,put 20 gallons of fresh fuel in it,made sure exhaust and cat was not plugged up,made sure turbo was not seized up,checked pmd for ref signals got 1.23 in and 0.1 out,run lift pump to fill fuel lines to the ip then took out the glow plugs and the the glow plug fuse and turned the engine over until fuel mist was coming out of all 8 plug holes then put glow plugs back in and checked power to them and they are all getting power,still a no start.it is trying real hard to start,have some black smoke from tail pipe,i have had a motis scanner hooked to it and no codes and it say's everything is functioning ok...this is a 1995 chevy 3500HD 6.5 auto no air and is an ex AT&T 35 ft. bucket truck from TEXAS.any and all suggestions, ideas and help is greatly appreciated and welcomed. pulling my hair out here in citra florida...thanks
 
A compression check may be in order. Was the IP ever removed? It may be out of time.
 
I was wondering along same lines. How long since engine has run. If fuel system (especialy IP) was disturbed there could be a lot of air that still needs to be purged out.
Have you tried a known good PMD yet? Where is PMD now?
 
My first experience with a 6.5 turbo was a 95 vin F. Long story and this might be a long shot but it sounds like you have covered everything else. The short version of the story is that I found one of the bolts on the timing sprocket had worked its way out and sheared off on the front cover. This sheared the roll pin on the shaft of the IP. It also broke the cam thrust plate. The IP gear would rotate but the IP would not turn or would intermittently turn. I would think the IP would still "fire" just way of of time, stuck wherever everything went boom. As I said a long shot but you may want to pull the oil fill tube and have a friend take a look while you are cranking. May also want to pull the steel backing plate to the water pump and see what you see.
 
Verify what the folks above mentioned, and squirt in the oil.
My focus would be on the glow plugs and bleeding the air.

How long are they cycling on? What type are they? Don't waste your time on anything other than Bosch duratems or AC Delco 60g.
 
Battery cables go bad. You need 100 RPM minimum to start.

Disconnect the CPS and see if it fires.

Are the glow plugs getting red hot? Remove one on each side, clamp it down to a ground and cycle the plugs. If they are not red you need to work on the glow plugs.

Why are you replacing the fuel system parts? Bad fuel? Bugs in fuel? You have a possible IP issue with bad fuel. You got fuel mist so I doubt it.

Did you do the head job 'by the book' rotating the engine to tighten the rocker arm assemblies down? Possible bent rocker arms or valves if you didn't. X2 Need a compression test.

What voltage is the ECM telling your scanner it has? Possible bad positive wiring including ignition switch.

With the blown head gaskets you could have some hydro locked damaged (bent) rods. Possible broken crank, rod, or cam. Rusty rings and bores from coolant sitting don't generate enough compression to start well.
