Hi, just bought a 93 Chevy 1 ton 6.5 turbo diesel with just 117k on it to pull a 27 ft. Trailer that we are purchasing. You could say I am jumping in the deep end to learn how to swim! The truck appears to be in great shape, Carfax says there was only one owner before us. Any info you can share on the truck, engine, towing, would be appreciated!

How heavy? If its going to be pretty heavy you'll want to do all the mods for performance and cooling along with a bigger turbo.

Welcome to thetruckstop. Read some threads and interact a little. There is plenty of good knowledge and friendly people on this forum.

Yeah, its almost too much to type with one thread. What are your expectations, experience towing, where you plan to tow (elevation and grades) , how often etc. How much do you feel comfortable doing yourself and budget for modifications etc.

Is the truck all original now?

Welcome to The Truck Stop.
Thanks, everyone, for the welcomes! To answer some of your questions, there are some hills, like the coast range between us and the Oregon coast, or the Cascades if we head towards Mt. Hood area. We are close to sea level. As far as budget for mods, probably don't have too much, hoping it will be ok "as is". But if needed, I can do bolt-on type mods myself. The dealer showed me some research he did about adding mods, since he was thinking about buying this truck himself. I forget the name of the company he contacted, was somewhere in the midwest I think. Most of them were in the low hundreds. As for experience in towing, I have none, other than small utility trailers. Will probably do no more than 3-6 trips per year, mostly within 100 miles of us. As far as I know the truck is all original. As I said in my first post, there was only one owner before us. According to a friend I showed the truck to, he said it looks like the guy towed a slide-in (term?) fifth wheel, as there is a separate plug in towards the front of the bed, on the side, and there are what look like square hitches under the bed on the sides towards the front also.

Ok, at first it sounds like it will need a lot of mods but some will depend on you. Its a 22 year old truck and not equivalent to the modern Diesel rigs out there so read up and figure out your expectations and goals.

The Achilles heel of the 6.5 is shedding heat. Sounds simple at first but there are 2 major components to it and you need to understand the overall system and basics of how it all interacts.

Heat is shed through 2 major areas: the engine coolant and air flowing through the engine. Some is also shed through the oil but lets keep it simple to start and most don't worry about the oil. How hot each indicator can get will depend on the other 2.

The radiator needs to be clean! This requires taking off the grill and getting behind the oil coolers and making sure all "fins" are straight and there is no build up of bugs and crud. The rule of thumb limit for engine coolant temperature is 215-220F. There are options for the water pump, cooling fan, and engine coolant type for upgrades.

The engine is turbo charged and that is a bit of discussion. The original exhaust and air flow is too restrictive and needs upgrading. Most put on at least a 3" mandrel bent exhaust system. I like the 3 inch down pipe (first pipe out of the turbo) and 4 inch the rest of the way. Then the turbo can be modified and upgraded.

That is a broad start and discussions will generally revolve around ways to improve those 2 areas. Each can be as long a discussion as your willing to type, read, and discuss.

Welcome!

I'll sugar coat the truth as best I can and leave the part about me snorting my soda out my nose over your "hope."

It's not "ok as is" unless you want to equip your trailer with orange triangles and get passed by farm tractors on hills.

First off the 6 blade fan is likely bolted to a 22 year old ineffective when new fan clutch. Further bolted to a low output water pump with uneven bank flow (link) that also needs upgraded to a High Output pump. This needs to be replaced with a 9 blade or Duramax fan with a new 4 bolt or thread on fan clutch. I prefer the Kennedy Diesel low temp clutch myself. Your oil coolers need to be removed from in front of the condenser and the mat of debris on the condenser behind the coolers removed. Push the engine past 210 and the rings get ruined as well as block and head cracks show up. The passenger side runs hotter then the driver's side - driver side has the temp gauge sensor...

Cooling demand is increased by the asthma attack turbo (article here) that converts 3-4 MPG and 22MPH into heat by restricting the exhaust. Made worse by the fender snorkel removal detailed here.

With the above mods you got a cheap diesel truck (that no one wants) and will still be under budget of a diesel truck you can now keep up with.
