If any debris makes it into the tube - the idea of no sock is it will go through the 3/8” line and get stopped by the prefilter. The “sock” is a prefilter- just a non serviceable one.
It is super cheap to make and go together on the assembly line. Any high quality vehicle build does not use a penny pinching sock. They use an an actual pre-filter. Millions of real diesels each put on a million plus miles with no sock and never have a problem of a leaf or other debris plugging the fuel line. Is there a specific situation a person could come up with that a sock is better? Sure. But every single semi truck, every single piece of heavy equipment all design an open tube in the tank and a prefilter outside the tank for reliability.
