Mods- if posted in wrong place, please fix me.

This forum is f'n amazingly helpful because of all you for the 6.5 world. Now that I'm spoiled...

So about a year and a half ago the Wife thought the Hummer wasted too much fuel and 2 weeks later we own a 1987 mercedes 300 d.

Does anyone know of a good forum for these older mercedes diesels? I see a couple the search engines bring up but if there is one any of you are on I would like to learn some of the finer details behind this little car in my hummers parking spot.

Ya, thats my car and engine, etc. :rippedhand: I guess i'm just missing a couple of parts...somehow I don't think he is still getting the 35 mpg though.

Give BenzWorld <dot> org a whirl.

IIRC, the 87 300D was a five cylinder with straight forward mechanical injection and a 4 speed auto (started in 2nd unless 1st was triggered by either very heavy throttle (near WOT), pressing the kickdown switch, or manually selecting 'L'). If it was turbo'd, there is probably some version of of a soot trap (looked something like a football in the down pipe) which clogged over time (I do recall that the Saloon class had it, but do not remember whether it was put into the E class). As a quickie test to see if the powertrain as a whole is in synch, engage the kickdown from a stop and it should immediately downshift to 1st and redline the gear; do the same from a rolling start (say, 30 MPH) and it should downshift to the lowest gear possible and redline it out as well with the only difference of a little more 'lag' until the tranny re-grabs as it will probably drop two (maybe three depending on 1st's redline) gears.

Fun car, enjoy it

Ok thanks. Mine is the 6 cylinder not the 5 but still suppose to be decent. At least there are no spark plugs!

Interesting . . . Check for gray market status as I recall that era 3.0L was the 5 cyl here in the Colonies; also, sometimes the E class 300D had a sub badge for the 2.5L engine (turbo?). If it is the US spec engine, might have a 3.5L which is not that common. 87 is also about the time when the dollar was still strong against the Deutschmark and it was far cheaper to import Euro versions and do what minimal changes were necessary for US emissions (probably nothing for the diesel).
