Looking to do a gear swap what axles do i have ?

I looked his site over not much help i got the 14T rear but it could any of the 2 fronts how do i find out for sure ?

Mike

I'm almost positive that you have the 9.25" front end. The light duty six-lug 2500s would've had the smaller one, 8.5" or whatever it is. There is a picture of the two on Randy's site can't you tell by that?

Not really cause almost all of them GM front ends visually look the same for the most part. . .

Mike

I'm getting told to watch my Water temp after the gear swap as the 6.5-T might heat up after a few seconds of turning the higher Revs ?

Mikey

Well its got the 14t rear so worst case i order the Rea set of gears and drop the front drive shaft. . .
Then i can worrie about the Fricken front axle at another time. . .

Mikey

have you tried taking the VIN to a dealership and see if they can tell you what front axle it came with? Worth a try at least.

Welp that sucked they didn't have a clue what i was talking about. . .
is there and online place for decoding this Rig ?

Mikey

Mikey, have you called Randy's Ring & Pinion to see if they can clarify for you? I would think that the higher GVWR 2500s with 8 lug wheels have the 9.25" differential where the light duty 2500s with 6 lug wheels have the 8.25" differential.

No i haven't called them no i just looked around i have 8 lug axles yes, dose this mean it can only have the Bigger axle ?

Mikey

Oh another thing will there need to be anything done to the trans for the gear swap ?

Mikey

Your transmission should be fine after a gear swap, assuming it's in good working condition already. A fluid/filter service can't hurt.

Since everyone has helped you determine that you indeed have a 10.5" 14bolt full floating rear axle, here is how we can help determine what front axle you have. Your rear axle is production option 1TA.

Check your glovebox, and see if you still have the RPO sticker in there.

You will need to look for production option C6P, which is 8,600 GVW. This produciton option gives you the larger 9.25" front diff, 9.5" rear diff (which can be upgraded with the 10.5" full floater option 1TA) and 6-leaf rear springs.

actually my door says my GVWR is 8600LB's. so then it its got both big axles.
and yes a fluid and filter change is going to be done as well. . .it looks good but i change them before they look bad. . .

Mike

Yeah i'd be dead surprised to see a 8-lug with the 8.25" axle up front. The 9.25" was used across the board with 8-lug trucks, IIRC. You can also see that your front axle has a wide stance, the 9.25" front sits wider than it's 6-lug brothers.

Great. . .Now i can start operation gear down. . .I'll get my acceleration one way or the other. . .

Mikey

how do i go about correcting the speedo ?
what sort of unit/tool ect will i need ?

My REPO's:

Now can you tell me what it has for gears now ?
