LBZ met a hill it couldnt climb today.

Suppose first time I get injector problems it will get an lly head swap and maybe a big vvt. Injector problems have me gun shy and I like my 6 speed allison.

Im not worried about oomph im worried about getting up the hills.

I like Kodiaks. Not many standard duramax trucks made these days?

Some used the Duramax LG4, aka Isuzu 6H. Big inline 6. The newest body style Topkick and Kodiak. That COE Isuzu thing too.

I 'think' there was rumors about GM rolling out the MD line again...don't quote me on that.

The GMT-800 HD trucks seem to be geared more towards highway towing performance and comfort, instead of sacrificing it all for utility.

They have strong frames and axles (even the IFS isn't all bad) but could definitely do with some stiffer T-bars and Leaf packs.

Right now my 2500HD (gasser, unfortunately) can haul more than I ever need it too, but it was bought to haul a tandem axle trailer and bobcat around, which it does regularly. I've loaded it down with snowmobiles, drilling equipment, then 2 more snowmobiles on a trailer w/komatik (basically an Eskimo tow behind sled) and it was sagged a bit, but my old 98 K1500 would wimper and cower from such a load.

My 2500 could use 4.10's, the 3.73's and larger tires have me in 4th at ~2200 rpm @ 50mph not bad for towing the weight i have but take offs are kinda rough. The spring are good for normal towing, loaded stock trailers and similar. The frame doesnt budge really the brakes do ok and the axles are tough but the spings are weak and cant handle overloading.

http://oklahomacity.craigslist.org/cto/3100101652.html Didnt know the 454 ever came in front of one of the old allisons! That means a 6.5..... Uh oh thoughts are going through my little head...

Sell Dmax for a couple thou over pay off, run the 454 for a yr (poor gas bill) and find a suitable 6.5L or maybe 12valve (depending on my mood) and NOT have much if any payments. AND i get to have a GMT400!

What is the GVRW for these rigs?

If thats the case then the DMV can retag me probably. Just making sure it is comparable to the GMT 800 4500 and 5500's.

Are these 'Vortech' 454? I'm guessing a DS4 6.5 swap wouldnt be out of the picture (yes full 99-00 wiring would be needed) but the auto allison is a bit iffy in my mind, heard some 6500's had Eaton 10 and 13 speeds . Maybe the 454 option was in those models too!

Any info one can scrape up would be great!

That would be cool!!

Here are some pictures of a friends 3500HD. He ended up either cracking the block, or blowing a gasket. Offered the truck to me for 5k as a roller. Wish i could have justified the use for it..

Ooo a 4wd one!^^

It was a sick truck. He bought it at auction about 5-6 years ago. It used to be a 4wd ambulance. The fire department sent the truck out when purchased and had the 4wd conversion done. The kid used it to start off a scrap hauling business. He is now into cummins trucks. I wish i had the green when this thing was for sale. Sold it about 2 years ago, not sure where it went to. Had 4.10 gears and could haul a house. If it was a 95' i prolly would have taken out a loan to buy it. (I like tuneable obd-1 for my cheapness). The truck had the spring to take a monster load ( i had a pic of this thing loaded somewhere) but not the power to get the owner where he wanted to go fast enough.

Im sorry tanner, these are the last pictures i will post. Ive been stealing your thread.

More on the 3500HD
The pic with the black box on the back is supposedly 9k lbs of steel.
Then the last two are the new toys that he uses for fun and to haul loads

they truck did not fail you, if you had taken care of the trans after adding the power to it and towing the overweight loads you would not have that problem. I pushed my old lbz way harder than that, budget built trans with alto clutches, precision converter, and a transgo jr held double-over (6th gear) at a hair over 30,000# trailer weight of 21,500 and truck weight off 9,000+

you want to pull big loads that the engineers didn't design the truck for you have modify it so it will. If you were at stock power levels and used the tranny to climb the hill (before you damaged the tranny) i bet a transgo jr and converter would hold that weight all day if you were not abusive. A 6.5 will never out perform what an LBZ allison combo can do.

X2!

I never said it couldnt do it! I just cant afford the down time to get it strong enough to pull that heavy and take the risk of loosing my @$$ towing weights that i cant get tagged for UNLESS you know something i dont!

I have transgo JR and have done a full trans flush. A tranny rebuild takes time i dont have, I can trade up and not loose much if any time and keep rolling with my business and start taking hay loads acrss state lines. I've got 800 bales of sorghum that arent moving as fast as i like but had a call for 300 a couple weeks ago but they need it hauled and my hauling buddy is swamped. My 45 ft float can haul quite a bit if i can get a rig that can drag it and there is no way my stock allison internals and suspension can do it, THE DMAX IN FRONT CAN, maybe i should have said i met a hill my ALLISON couldnt pull so I wouldnt havent taken f'in chit of the statement, sorry to bash everyones invincible dmax by reporting the limitations i have found.

Ya'lls statements make me feel like a 6.5er pissing on an A Team Turbo lol

Tanner, you cant convince your family for safetys sake to help you with getting a larger truck? Maybe using that against them will help you? lol

My dad has the same swather and trailer set up and pulls it with an F250 gasser and says I need to just drive slower. He doesn't leave the state or really even the county.

I've settled with the fact that I can afford an older rig on my own and I can get away from my 600 a month payments.
