Just Ordered An HX40WII

I've been planning for awhile to eventually upgrade my turbo, but I had to speed up the process after finding my GM1 is leaking oil into my intake.:mad2: Noticed some blue smoke from my truck about a week ago, and I then noticed some oil seepage at the silicone hose between the turbo, and intake manifold. I pulled the inlet hose off the front of the turbo, and there was no oil there, and I pulled the CDR tube off with the engine running, and there didn't appear to be anything unusual there, so I pulled the upper intake, and there was oil everywhere. My turbo isn't even a GM3, its a GM1 (the very earliest of the GMX turbos).
I've been reading alot on both the HX40II, and the ATT, and came to the conclusion that HX would be better suited to my truck. With 3.42's, and the mechanical DB2, I think I would be better off with the smaller housing of this turbo. With my converter locked up at 60mph, I'm at 1800 rpm, and the factory GM turbo won't do better than 3-4 psi at that rpm, and if I need more I have to go past about half throttle so it downshifts to 3rd, then the boost shoots to 10. I know this will be amplified even with the HX40, but I figure it would be worse yet with a larger turbo like the ATeam. Anyway, with raceday making the install kits again, it made the choice easier. I haven't ordered the install kit from him yet, but hopefully I'll be able to in the next week or two.

Compressor is a bit small at 56mm but should be a good turbo. Similar to an HX35, spec wise.

I noticed the compressor side was smallish, but I think it should work well, or at least alot better than a GMX. I am curious how close these really are to a Holset, and if parts for a true Holset would fit. You can even get these with the slip on hose end, rather than the v-band. Its just a thought of something that might be neat to try in the future.:D
Is there any easier way to machine the bearing plate to fit the larger 86mm exducer, than sending it off to a turbo shop?

Not sure, I can't remember if anyone has had one apart but I guess you could take the compressor wheel off and meassure the shaft.

Opening up the backing plate is easy, I used a die grinder with a flat end and just carefully cut it larger. It doesn't have to be perfect, just large enough so wheel doesn't touch. The hard part is the compressor housing. A guy on Ebay sells the 60mm wheel and housing for $250. That's a good deal.
 
Awesome pick on the turbo. Huge improvement over stock and will work great with your taller gearing. I used basically the same turbo on my '96 with 4.10 gears and stock ECM, I loved it! Luckily all you need to do is turn up the fuel a bit but be sure to run gauges if your not already.
Add an adjustable waste gate actuator that way you can dial in the boost.

Thanks. I'm hoping that I will love this turbo as well. I'm certainly looking forward to seeing the results. I already have both boost, and EGT gauges.

You will be very happy with the HX40II let me know when you are ready to go, I would suggest my Mechanical Wastegate Adjuster to go with it

I'll be contacting you very soon, however I'll probably wait to see if I have a problem with to much boost before ordering the wastegate controller. As usual funds are tight, so I try to only buy what I have too. I really look forward to buying the install kit, as it looks like a very well made kit.:thumbsup:

Turbo Is Here!

My turbo arrived today, and it sure is pretty!:hihi: It has an 8 blade cold side, and a 10 blade hot side. I removed the silencer ring, as well as rotating the wastegate actuator pod around 180*, as the hose nipple was aimed away from the turbo, and I wanted it aimed towards the turbo. I've heard that some of the Chinese Knock Offs have some play in the shaft, but if this one does, its so little I cant feel it. I'll pull the turbine housing as soon as I get a chance, so I can check for any unwanted debis, as well as verifying the inducer/exducer measurements. Here are a few pics.

I didn't feel like taking they're word for it, so I removed the cartridge from the turbo today to check things out. These measurements are quite different from the ones they have posted for this turbo online.

Here are the specs they list for this turbo. I rounded off to nearest MM.

The 52mm inducer on the compressor is small even for an hx35!
I would certainly say these guys have no clue what they are selling! I'm sure it will be better than stock, and maybe I can upgrade the compressor side in the future, as I think the exhaust is ok.

While you have it apart, cut that flange off the outlet and smooth it out so it looks like this

Thanks Bruce. As you can see in the pic, it has the large outer lip, and steps down to a smaller one. I was thinking about just cutting off the outer one, and leaving the smaller to act as a catch for the hose clamp to be on the other side of. I could taper it a little so the hose would slide over it easily. What do you think?

You can try but it fits pretty tight I don't think you need to with the T clamps

I have a source for a O-ring Vband flange for the holsets if ya want it.... why cut a hsg if a flange could be had for 50$..

Oh, can you post up. I wanted the OE pipe for years but everyone thinks they're friggin gold. Ended up cutting like everyone else.
 
I got my installation kit ordered from raceday! :arms: Bruce is a great guy to deal with, and I'm really looking forward to seeing the kit, as it looks like a very high quality piece. :thumbsup:
