Is my engine knocking or have I just lost my marbles

You might pull the inner fender and turbo.
Crack the injection lines one at a time and see if the noise stops.
If it stops on one certain cylinder then swap around a couple of the injectors.
If the noise follows the injector then replace that injector.
If the noise stays on that cylinder then suspect a rod bearing is getting ready to let loose.
If the noise gets louder with the cracked injection line then suspect a wrist pin or piston is going to flap out on Yuh.
If it has been making noise for this long chances are whatever itiz, might just stay there for long time now.

as wered as it sounds. it sounded normal on the recording when i was out there. it wasn't knocking that I could hear. the only difference is I had just been out driving it picking my son up from school. I guess I need to video it when it's cold and see. trying to think what can knock when colder and not when fully warm, I'm not coming up with anything right off my head

Injectors on mine clatter quite loudly for about a half to a minute, soon as cylinders warm a little it would quiet right down.

no sealant. the back of the HB is wet with fresh oil and so is the lip of the oil pan. there is evidence of oil that has slung from the HB onto the oil cooler lines too. Gee I hope it's not the timing cover and the old HB wore into it. I didn't see any evidence of that when wiped it down while I had it apart.
 
I think I have come to the conclusion (as the thread title says) I just lost my marbles... it's not the engine knocking. maybe just the injectors making noise when it's cold or the valve train. apparently noting to worry about and would make sense why I've driven it like this so long and nothing has happened in terms of the crank, rods, or pistons.

I need to ease my mind and maybe put together a parts list on fixing the oil leaks along with some needing maintenance I need to do. Maybe even budget enough to get the hood painted to match the rest of the truck. Probably not.... it'll more than likely get rattle canned to match at the rate I'm going. LOL

and yes I just discovered the new front seal is leaking. I guess I need to pull it all down and replace the seal again. not sure what I did wrong installing it. I will run it for a few days and see if it seals up, but I doubt it will.

I've had brand new seals leak and triple checked to see what I did wrong.
But they were just bad out of the box.
 
I hear the knock you are concerned about. IMO it's normal IDI clatter. How many miles on the injectors? Recall the way you know the timing is correct is to bring the truck up to 45 MPH and keep it there a time. Then roll into the throttle: the IDI clatter should go away as the precups heat up with throttle added.

As you have an oil leak I would replace the seal and inspect the keyway(s) and key for slop. It may be leaking from the crankshaft bolt vs. the seal. Although I never did it: I have seen it recommended to use a sealer on the HB to crankshaft.

About $8600 to your door for a longblock per site sponsor link below. Not bad for a NEW engine. These GM cast engines are known as SCRAP in the PER world due to being crack prone. (Professional Engine Rebuilder.) IMO Spend the extra on a NEW engine. Further Twisted Steel Performance @Twisted Steel Performance is also worth a call about these engines.

I will have to do another video when it's cold. it's much louder and really sounds like a rod then. I'm about to order another front seal. the oil is coming from the back side of the HB. the front half is dry. I am assuming that I might have scratched the timing cover when I pulled the old one though I ran my finger in where the seal goes and didn't feel anything. going to use some permatex in there when I replace again.

something I noticed remembering when I installed the seal. the new one only had one inner lip where the Mahle seal looks to have a double lip. I might go with this one as a better choice than the national seal I used.

Honestly it sounds normal when it's cold and idling. I will try to remember this afternoon as I'm leaving for work and post it up after I get home.
 
Here is a short clip of it starting and running cold. well cool, it ws 80 degrees outside and it had been sitting since 7am this morning. this was taken at around 3:45pm

 
after listening to it a couple of times myself, I an thinking it's more up top ether valve clatter or injector cold noises that like @WarWagon is saying is just normal idi clatter that I'm trying to rack my brain around for no reason.
 
Yep that's my plan now. seal will be here on Thursday afternoon. also ordered the tool from amazon you suggested for the fan clutch. that should make things a bit easier. that tool will become a permanent fixture in the truck tool box along with the long breaker bar and tire socket I keep in there.

as for the seal. I want to get the truck up on the ramps and find something I can put over the crank snout like a short piece of PVC and a cap into the old seal and then power wash the front of the engine while it's apart. Might even steal the wifee's can of oven cleaner from the kitchen to help break up all he muck. Hopefully I can find something the right size to keep water and muck from getting into the engine, if not maybe i can use what's left of the old balancer to slide it on just enough to go past the seal.
