Your budget & application counts. Everything Doug said above is on point.
If you pay for oil testing you will learn how often you need to change it based on your use. Different environments, condition of the engine, and how you run it makes a big difference.
I have worked in oil& fuel industry side where a lot of testing was done, made friends with some petroleum engineers. One of whom when I was asking about some of the more wazoo oils- started telling me about tribodyne. He said it would be many years before the nearest competitors get close to them including the place he was working for (can’t say who but their name is always in the random top 5 lists).
The wazoo oils if tested To prove when they are done is still more expensive than many others but the idea isn’t pinched pennies- it’s getting a longer life and more efficiency from the engine while in use.
Wix (aka Napa gold) filter is still the best one made as a normal filter.
A Frantz bypass filter is my recommendation for most folks to take it to the next level.
My plan for my engine build that is about 10 years past due now is adding a drain & refill hose from the pan so I can hook up a 120v powered centrifuge for removing the soot while it’s parked. Unfortunately almost none of the centrifuges that are used in bypass mode clean any better than the frantz because it takes 100-110psi oil pressure to spin it up to speed for the 1/10 micron a centrifuge can clean to.
